Speculated as a possible reinforcement for Flamengo , striker João Félix is starting to generate controversy among sports analysts. Despite his recognized talent, part of the press points to off-field issues as a possible obstacle to his adaptation to Brazilian football . Among the critics is commentator Victor Birner , who sees the player's ego as the main problem throughout his career.
He always placed himself above the clubs..."
João Félix emerged as a jewel of Benfica and was quickly transferred to Atlético de Madrid for millions of dollars. However, he never managed to establish himself as a protagonist in the teams he played for, despite his technical ability. For Birner, the Portuguese player has a similar behavior to Neymar, but without the same weight of achievements or sporting impact.
“When I commented on games in which João Félix participated, I always compared him a bit to Neymar , but much lower . Because Neymar is a player who wanted to be the protagonist ever since he left Barcelona. When he went to PSG, I think he went to PSG to be the Messi of PSG, but he didn’t manage to do so. João Félix thinks like that . He only played for very rich teams, very big teams . And even though the teams needed him to behave differently, without the ball , he never moved . He always put himself above the clubs,” said the commentator.
In Birner's view, João Félix's success at Flamengo would depend on a profound change in his attitude. The commentator believes that it would be up to football director José Boto — who has known the player well since his time at Benfica — to exert a decisive influence in “shaping the athlete's mentality”.
“I wonder how he will behave if he comes to Brazil. So, unless Boto, if Flamengo manages to sign him, has an influence over him that will make him behave differently ,” Birner pointed out.
Another factor that could weigh on this equation is Flamengo's internal environment. Under the command of Filipe Luís , who has known much of the team since his playing days, the club has built a solid and aligned locker room . A figure with difficulty adapting or with an individualistic attitude could compromise this balance.
Therefore, despite João Félix's undeniable talent, his possible arrival at the club is viewed with caution by the press, especially due to his off-field history and psychological profile.

Defender Gil, 38, has officially announced his retirement from professional football. In an interview with TV Record, the former defender confirmed the end of his playing career: " A new phase, I'm retiring from football. It's decided ."
Gil, ex-Corinthians, when declaring retirement: "the only thing missing was playing for Flamengo"
Gil built a remarkable relationship with Corinthians , a club he played for twice. Between 2013 and 2016, he was a key player in Tite's squad, crowning the period with the 2015 Brazilian Championship title . He returned to Corinthians in 2019 and, during his second stint, reached the impressive milestone of 400 appearances for the club.
Despite his solid history at Corinthians, Gil revealed a dream he never fulfilled: playing for Flamengo . " I did everything I wanted, the only thing missing was playing for Flamengo . Not everything is perfect. I'm grateful for the career I've built," he declared.
The final chapter of his career was at Santos, where he played in the 2024 Série B. The defender played an important role in the club's promotion to Série A , but lost his place in the squad and terminated his contract in August of the same year. Shortly thereafter, he decided to hang up his boots.
Having also played in Chinese football and enjoyed a solid career in Brazil, Gil ended his career as one of the greatest defenders of the last decade , recognized for his consistency, physical strength, and leadership on the field. In total, the former player appeared in 865 matches, scoring 43 goals and contributing 15 assists.
