This Saturday (12), National Funk Day is celebrated. Thus, MC Pocah celebrated the date and reflected on the impact of the musical genre that took her to the main music charts, festival stages and the biggest reality show in the country, Big Brother Brasil.
MC Pocah talks about her career in funk: "Funk taught me to exist in my own way. To speak loudly, to wear what I want, to not lower my head."
She continued: " It was the first place where I felt truly free ," declares the artist, with more than a decade dedicated to funk and being one of the best known in the field.
Raised in Duque de Caxias, Baixada Fluminense, Pocah started at 15 and has remained faithful to the type of music that launched her from the beginning. With over 950,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, around 600 million views on YouTube, and hits alongside Pabllo Vittar , Lexa, and Rebecca, the funk singer has become one of the most remembered female names in funk today.
It was on the album "Cria de Caxias," released in 2024, that Pocah further established her roots with the autobiographical work, which blends beats with pop, trap, and reggaeton. The project gained prominence on the charts in Brazil and Portugal, being taken to the Rock in Rio 2024 Espaço Favela and to the success of this year's Carnival.
"We still face a lot of judgment for being in funk. But I'm proud. Proud to have started early, to have written my first song at 15, and to have never stopped being who I was. Being in funk also means being your own person. My body, my clothes, my aesthetic, my attitude—all of this is expression ," she comments.
Representation is a key part of the singer's story as a Black, funk-loving, bisexual woman from the outskirts of São Paulo. Her identity has been showcased three times on the São Paulo Fashion Week runways: " Funk gave me the courage to go further. But everything I've built has been with it. There's no Pocah without funk."

Marcinho VP, identified by police as one of the leaders of the Comando Vermelho (CV) criminal faction, said he has changed after years behind bars and wants to start a new life from scratch. This statement is included in his book, A Cor da Lei (The Color of the Law). which will be released this Saturday (12). Thus, Oruam , his son, will be present.
Oruam , who sparked controversy by asking for his father's freedom during a music festival in 2024, writes the preface to Marcinho VP's new work, whom he calls a "hero " and highlights that he followed his father's entire trajectory.
"I didn't grow up with my father by my side, but he was always my hero, even when people kept wrongly labeling him a drug dealer. I saw the man he was becoming alone inside a 6m2 cell, I saw the songs he composed, I read all his books, and I see how he studies ," he said. "I will give everything I have to be the best possible spokesperson for the man he has become," he added.
In the book to be launched at Complexo do Alemão, Marcinho shares his testimony about his transformation after decades in prison. According to the inmate, he is experiencing a new stage in his life, marked by his dedication to literature, music, and family reconstruction.
"I've been in prison for decades, I've lost a lot, I've lost my children, I've lost time and opportunities. But in the midst of all this, I found a strength I didn't even know I had. I started writing, composing, studying, all to try to be a better person ," commented Oruam 's father.
However, Marcinho complained that he is still the target of prejudice and that no one wants to give him a "new chance": "Even with all the changes, with all the effort, I realize that no one really wants to meet Marcio and see that I can and want to start my life from scratch. No one gives me a chance to prove that I've truly changed ."
"We hear about reintegration, about giving someone a second chance, but when the time comes, what I see is a look of disapproval. It's as if only one thing is possible: paying for the mistake and being remembered as someone beyond redemption. I changed for my family, for my truth, and for the lessons I learned throughout my life ," lamented Marcinho VP.
