Former striker Romário recalled his coexistence with Washington Rodrigues, known as Apolinho, who passed away this Wednesday (15) from cancer. In 1995, after returning from Barcelona to Flamengo, Romário had Apolinho as his coach, a period he describes with affection and respect.
“A fearless, courageous, serious guy, always willing to help people. I can say that he was a father to everyone during that period,” said Romário in an interview with CBN. Apolinho, who was a passionate commentator for Flamengo, accepted the invitation to coach the team in its centenary year.
In 1995, under Apolinho's command, Flamengo had a dream attack composed of Sávio, Romário and Edmund. Despite expectations, the team finished the Brasileirão in 21st place. Three years later, Apolinho returned to Flamengo as football director, always maintaining his love for the club.
The nickname Apolinho, an allusion to the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission, was given by the announcer Celso Garcia, becoming a trademark of the radio host. In addition to his passion for Flamengo, Apolinho was known for his charismatic personality and dedication to the sport.
