Flamengo and eight other clubs requested the suspension of the Brazilian Championship during the Copa América, due to team absences during the national team tournament. However, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), on Thursday night (29), rejected the request. The entity issued a note explaining the reasons.

SEE THE CBF NOTE:

The Brazilian Confederation of Football (CBF), in response to the letter sent on February 15 by Serie A clubs, requesting changes to the 2024 National Men's Football Calendar, due to the 48th edition of the Copa América de Seleções, is hereby publicly providing the necessary clarifications.

The entity appreciates and considers this broad and permanent dialogue between Clubs, Federations and CBF essential for the improvement and development of the Calendar and of all Brazilian Football and its competitions. The preparation of the Brazilian competition calendar is extremely complex, needing to be adequate and harmonized with the calendars published by FIFA and CONMEBOL, and also with specific requirements of Brazilian legislation (Lei Pelé and Lei Geral do Esporte).

Upon receiving the proposal and out of respect for those involved, CBF immediately activated different internal areas of the entity to carry out studies and simulations, which takes time. It also consulted the commercial partners involved in the competition, including the main company holding the broadcasting rights to Série A of the Copa do Brasil.

The calendar for the 2024 men's football competitions was released in October 2023 , four months ago, and managed, for the second consecutive year, to avoid conflicts with FIFA dates, thus honoring the commitment to its affiliates and clubs.

Thus, in response to the request from the Series Clubs A, we highlight the following points:

The clubs did not consider changing the dispute model for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup (Club World Cup). Teams from South America, to reach the final, will have to play three matches, unlike previous years. If the winner of the Copa Libertadores is a Brazilian team, which has occurred in the last five editions, and if the club is also a finalist in the 2024 Copa do Brasil, the proposal presented would not be viable;

The Copa do Brasil 2024, there would be an interval of 4 (four) months between the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, which generates a profound loss of interest among spectators, devaluing the competition and potentially causing losses to clubs, sponsors and rights holders;

There would be damage to the dynamics of the competitions as it would result in an interval of practically a month between rounds of Series A of the Brazilian Championship;

The CBF took great care to consult the main company that holds the rights broadcasting of Série A and the Copa do Brasil. Unfortunately, the intended change directly affects the fulfillment of the contracts, as well as the contracts signed with the sponsors who did all the planning based on the dates previously announced by the CBF;

The proposal to change the 2024 calendar was sent after the start of several state and regional championships and on the eve of the start of the 1st phase of the Copa do Brasil, which could generate uneven adjustments that would not involve the entire national football calendar and all its competitions;

< The change would result in the extension of the season for 2 (two) clubs, impacting defined vacation dates for athletes and coaching staff, which could lead to serious problems involving labor rights, and would generate impacts for the 2025 Calendar;

In the proposal presented, the round of 16 and quarter-final stages would take place exactly during the Copa América 2024, with the clubs equally missing, but in a championship with knockout stages and with high financial prizes;

< br>

In view of these and other reasons set out in full in the attached letter, the CBF informs that it is not possible to accept the request to change the 2024 calendar. However, it remains open to dialogue, as has always happened, to discuss broadly with Federations, Clubs, partners and athletes the improvement of competitions and the national calendar.

Speculated as a possible reinforcement of Flamengo to fill the gap left by Pedro, striker Anthony Martial is free on the market, but has not played since December 9, 2023. On that occasion, Manchester United, his former club, entered the field to face Bournemouth and lost 3-0 in the Premier League. Martial was a starter and played for 56 minutes.

At the beginning of the year, the French striker suffered a groin injury that required surgery. Therefore, he was away for around 42 days, only returning in March. Even though there were three months left on his contract, Manchester United chose to let go of the player. Since then, Martial has been evaluating his next club and Flamengo is paying attention to his movements.

Just like Flamengo, Anthony Martial suffered from injuries in 2023/24. The star had several physical problems that kept him away from the field for a total of 60 days. Due to muscle pain, the player was not available for United in 12 matches last season.

Status of the deal between Flamengo and Anthony Martial

If the If Flamengo is really interested in the Frenchman, they will have to race against time and agree on the signing by Monday (9). Registration for free players is closing. According to Italian journalist Luca Bendoni, who works at the Gianluca Dimarzio portal, the deal could come to fruition soon.

Offered to Flamengo by his staff, Martial also had a drop in his personal numbers. In the 2022/23 season, the player scored six goals and provided two assists in the Premier League. In 2023/24, it was just one goal and no pass that resulted in the ball in the opponents' net.

Brazil has a positive record against Ecuador, with an unbeaten run of ten matches. The expectation is that the team can maintain this performance, especially playing at home.
