Flamengo had a year of major investments in 2024, with significant expenditure on hiring players and acquiring the land of Gasologista. These financial movements raise questions about the current state of red and black cash. Economist Cesar Grafietti warns that the club's economic situation may be more delicate than it appears.
“I had access to a quote that Flamengo did for next year and a series of movements emerged that show a much less reassuring scenario than I imagined. The club expects to end the year with practically zero cash, just over R$3 million. What surprises me most for the beginning of 2025 is that Flamengo estimates that it will receive R$146 million from seat sales at the new stadium. Now, how does the club propose or expect to receive this amount if there isn’t even a project?”, he began.
“So, it shows a risk that the club takes when making such an important investment, but in election year. The club today appears to be a little more vulnerable than it was some time ago. It's very easy to destroy something that took so long to recover. In this positive flow that Flamengo has, the risk of it falling apart very quickly is very high”, concluded Cesar, in publication no 'X'.
< p style="border: 1px solid rgb(197, 0, 24);">Net debt grows in 2024
With high spending throughout the season, the net debt of Flamengo increased R$395 million, reaching R$562 million in 2024. For comparison purposes, in 2023, the club recorded a net debt of just R$167 million, after a historic reduction of 90%in period.
Modest surplus in the last quarter
The financial report released by Flamengo showed a surplus of R$1.9 million in the third quarter of 2024. Despite the positive result, the value represents a drop of R$266.3 million in relation to the same period in 2023. The club justifies the difference due to the lack of significant player sales at this stage of the season.
Growth in gross revenue
Even with the increase in net debt, Flamengo recorded growth in gross revenue in the third quarter of 2024. The estimated value was R$826.5 million, surpassing the R$778.2 million presented in the same period of 2023.
Impact of the elections presidential elections in Flamengo
The financial reports were prepared under the management of the president Rodolfo Landim, who nominated Rodrigo Dunshee as his successor in the December 9 elections. If the opposition, represented by Luiz Eduardo Baptista or Maurício de Mattos, wins, a new approach on finance of the club may be adopted, which includes alternative initiatives to increase revenue generation in 2025.
