FlaBasquete, the current Champions League Americas champion, begins its quest for a third world championship this Thursday (18). With titles won in 2014 and 2022, the red-black team arrives at the 2025/26 season with the clear objective of repeating the feat in Singapore and consolidating itself as a global basketball powerhouse.


To achieve this goal, Flamengo formed a revamped squad, blending experienced players with promising young talents who embody the club's winning DNA. Argentine coach Sérgio Hernández, known as "Oveja," took over the team midway through last season and has already won the Champions League Americas.


STRATEGIC REINFORCEMENTS


FlaBasquete invested heavily to strengthen its roster. Among the reinforcements are Daniel Onwenu (formerly of Corinthians), Argentine Franco Baralle (formerly of Pinheiros), Wesley Castro, and Eric Buckner . The arrival of Dee Bost, an American point guard who became a naturalized Bulgarian, was a response to Baralle's injury, as he suffered an accident and will be out for the season.

FlaBasquete is in the final stages of preparation for the FIBA Intercontinental Cup, which will be held in Singapore on September 18-19. Amid the preseason in Europe, the club is working to increase the visibility of the sport and is negotiating the broadcast of the matches on the official Flamengo TV channel .


According to journalist Enéas Lima of the Garrafão Rubro-Negro website, Flamengo is working on an agreement with FIBA to broadcast the games. A decision has not yet been made, but the organization's official website already provides a link to the debut against NBA G-League United .


TOURNAMENT FORMAT


The competition brings together clubs from different continents. Flamengo is in the same group as NBA G-League United (USA) and Illawarra Hawks (Australia) . On the other side are AlAhli SC (Libya), Unicaja (Spain), and Utsunomiya Brex (Japan). Flamengo begins its quest for its third title on September 18th against the North American team, and faces the Australians the following day.

The 2025/26 FlaBasquete season begins with a commitment outside the country. This Monday (8), the red-black delegation arrived in Madrid, Spain, to play two friendlies before the FIBA Intercontinental Cup , scheduled to take place between September 18 and 21, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.


Before boarding, last Saturday (6), Orgulho da Nação opened the doors of the Hélio Maurício gym, in Gávea, for an open training session that brought together hundreds of fans. After the activity, players and coaching staff thanked the Nation for its support , taking photos and signing autographs.


FlaBasquete 's first match on Spanish soil will be this Wednesday (10), at 3 pm (Brasília time), against Burgos . On Friday (12), at the same time, the team returns to the court to face San Sebastian. The games serve as immediate preparation for the world tournament.


DEBUT IN THE INTERCONTINENTAL CUP

After the two friendlies, Flamengo heads to Singapore, where they will make their FIBA Intercontinental Cup debut on September 18th at 6:00 a.m. (Brasília time) against G League United. The competition will feature continental champions and invited teams at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
