A product of Santos' youth academy and with a notable stint at Athletico-PR, defender Robson Bambu made a comparison that caught attention: he put Sporting's forward Viktor Gyökeres on the same level of physical and technical characteristics as Paolo Guerrero, formerly of Flamengo. Meanwhile, Gyökeres is easily the top scorer in the Portuguese Championship, with 38 goals in 30 games. The second-placed player, Pavlidis, from Benfica, has 18 goals in 31 games – less than half the number of the Swede.

BAMBOO HIGHLIGHTS GUERRERO

In an interview with Lance, the Braga defender recalled clashes with both attackers and highlighted what differentiates the current top scorer in Portuguese football from the Peruvian center forward who made history at Rubro-Negro between 2015 and 2018. “I faced two attackers who are very different. Paolo Guerrero, in the Copa do Brasil final, and recently Gyökeres”, said Bambu, who played in the 2019 final for Athletico-PR against Internacional, a club that had Guerrero at that time.

CITED CONFRONTATIONS

The aforementioned match was marked by a solid performance by Furacão, who won both games in the final and frustrated the attempts of the Peruvian striker, who failed to score in the 180 minutes of the final. Gyökeres, in turn, is enjoying an impressive scoring streak in Europe . After scoring 43 goals and providing 14 assists in 50 games last season, the Swede surpassed his own numbers: 52 goals in just 48 games this season, with 12 more decisive passes.

“The difference is speed. Guerrero is very strong, knows how to play as a pivot, and holds the ball well, but Gyökeres can drag the defense and has much more depth,” Bambu added . The comparison makes sense in terms of the style of play. Guerrero, although technical and with a keen reading of the game, played more stationary and was known for working with his back to the goal. The Swede, at 26, combines physical strength with acceleration and mobility on both sides of the attack.

With the Flamengo jersey, Guerrero played 112 games, scored 43 goals and provided 13 assists. He was the team's top scorer in several seasons, although he struggled with injuries and suspensions during that time. After his time with the Rio de Janeiro club, he wore the jerseys of Internacional, Avaí, Racing, LDU and César Vallejo, until arriving at his current club, Alianza Lima, where he once again played at a high level in Peruvian football.

Gyökeres averages 1.2 goals per game, a rare feat even in Europe's less visible leagues. His performance puts him on the radar of clubs with greater investment and reinforces the value of the striker, who is already considered one of the most sought-after names on the market. At the moment, Flamengo has no direct relationship with the player, but the mention made by Bambu rekindles the interest of Flamengo fans in high-profile foreign names, especially during the mid-year transfer window.

This Thursday (18), Flamengo begins the dispute of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores against Estudiantes, at Maracanã. On the eve of the confrontation, the president and idol of the Argentine club, Juan Sebastián Verón, spoke about the expectations for the duel against Rubro-Negro.

DIFFERENT LEVELS

During an institutional event in La Plata, Verón highlighted the financial difference between the teams , with Mengão being the team with the highest market value among the tournament participants, but recalled Estudiantes ' tradition of overcoming opponents considered favorites.

Estudiantes' Verón on Flamengo in the Libertadores: "Yes, the challenge is difficult"

"Obviously, we know the power of our opponent, but we also know that we've been through similar situations against important teams, and that the club, given its history, has risen to the occasion. We've always kept this in mind: yes, the challenge is difficult, but we can excel and represent the club well , regardless of the result. We've experienced this before, and we continue to do so," the director stated.

VERON X FLAMENGO

In the early 1990s, Verón began his career at Estudiantes and played in the 2-0 victory over Flamengo in the 1994 Supercopa Libertadores . In addition to his former club, the former midfielder also shone for major teams such as Boca Juniors, Lazio, Manchester United and Inter Milan . In 2007, he returned to Estudiantes and was a key player in their 2009 Copa Libertadores victory.

Verón retired in 2014, but returned to the field three years later as a player-president . His last official match came in 2017, against Botafogo, also in the Copa Libertadores, during the group stage.
