The Maracanã Stadium, iconic stage of world football, is about to host a true marathon of games this week, something unprecedented since its renovation in 2013. Three official matches in three consecutive days, a feat that promises to enter the sport history. The sequence originates from the decision of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to extend the Brasileirão calendar, announced on October 27th. The objective was to accommodate the postponed championship games, avoiding the scheduling of matches during the FIFA date of November.
A decision that results in an exceptional schedule with high-level games: Brazil vs. Argentina on Tuesday, Fluminense vs. São Paulo on Wednesday and Flamengo vs. Bragantino on Thursday. It is worth mentioning that the duel between Brazil and Argentina for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, originally scheduled for November 21st, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), had already been scheduled for Maracanã since October 6th, becoming an integral part of this football triad.
However, the boldness of the agenda clashes with the recommendation of Greenleaf, the company responsible for maintaining the pitch, which, in April this year, stated that a minimum interval of 72 hours was necessary between matches. Maracanã's current challenge consists of hosting three games in less than 60 hours, starting at 9:30 pm on Tuesday. At the end of these matches, Maracanã will have reached the impressive milestone of 70 games in 2023. Since the first match on 12 January until game number 70 on November 23rd, 315 days had passed, resulting in an average of one game every 4.5 days. Despite these numbers, the season had six periods at intervals of 10 days or more without matches at Maracanã.
The marathon of games does not end on Thursday. On Saturday, Fluminense will face Coritiba at 9pm, thus consolidating four games in five days, a feat that has not occurred since March 2020, pre-pandemic, and which has been repeated only five times since the 2013 reform, always with one day of "rest" between two consecutive days. The year 2023 was not only marked by intense activity on the Maracanã pitch, but also by controversies that reverberated outside the four lines. The use of the stadium became a reason for clashes between athletes, managers and clubs, revealing unexpected challenges.
In March, Vasco's vice-president, Carlos Roberto Osório, questioned the Carioca semi-finals being held in less time. 24 hours at Maracanã. The previous year, Vasco faced resistance from the consortium that manages the stadium when requesting consecutive games, claiming that the pitch would not support it. However, the courts allowed it, and in 2023, the managers stated that the situation on the field was different. In July, the discussion heated up between Gabigol and Marcos Braz during halftime of Flamengo's game with Fortaleza. The striker blamed the state of the pitch for his ankle injury, which occurred due to holes in the pitch, leading to a half-time substitution.
In August, the announcement of the closure of the Maracanã to renovate the pitch for around 20 days generated controversy. Fluminense blamed the game Vasco vs. Atlético-MG for the closure of the stadium, which took place less than 15 hours after the Fluminense vs. América-MG. The rains in Rio de Janeiro worsened the situation, with the formation of puddles and deterioration of the lawn. In October, Flamengo insisted on playing against Bragantino at Maracanã, scheduled for October 28th or 29th, on the eve of the Libertadores final. Conmebol refused, prioritizing lawn care for the decision between Fluminense and Boca Juniors on November 4th.
On November 16th, Flamengo and Fluminense, after previous disputes over the use of the stadium, won the competition and will continue to manage Maracanã and Maracanãzinho until 2024. Criticism of Vasco for withdrawing from the temporary competition and asking for the notice to be challenged was refuted by rivals, who emphasized the importance of preserving the pitch. Flamengo and Fluminense will continue to manage the stadium until 2024 , or until the winner of the bid is determined, which will take place on December 7th. Vasco, despite the denial of the objection request, promises to compete in the bid that will determine the manager of Maracanã for the next 20 years. The Maracanã field, a scene of emotions and controversies, continues to be a protagonist both on and off the pitch.

Flamengo announced this Wednesday (13) that it has terminated its sponsorship agreement with Pixbet . The contract, valid from January 2024, was for two years (until December), with the possibility of automatic renewal for two more seasons — a clause that should be activated in September.
Expected values with PixBet:
The agreement also included FlaBet, Flamengo's own betting house, managed by PixBet:
The favorite to take over Flamengo's master sponsorship , SuperBet, faces stiff competition from Betano. The club has not yet decided on a new partner, but expects to sign a contract starting in September. Both companies have submitted three-year proposals, with values exceeding R$200 million per season and bonuses for targets, which could make the deal even more lucrative.
According to the ge portal, SuperBet's offer would surpass the contract signed with São Paulo, valued at R$600 million through 2030 , and could reach R$1 billion once the goals are met. Flamengo is working to make the new deal the largest sponsorship in Brazilian football.
The relationship began to strain after delays in installment payments, a situation the company admitted, acknowledging difficulties in honoring upcoming commitments . There are indications that PixBet will not exercise the renewal clause and will leave the club.
Flamengo 's board of directors wants to end the partnership in September so that the new sponsor can take over the uniforms immediately. PixBet is pleased with this possibility due to the outstanding amounts , but if an amicable agreement isn't reached, the termination will only take place in December, as stipulated in the contract.
Besides SuperBet and Betano, other bookmakers approached the club but withdrew due to the high fees required. If PixBet's exit is confirmed, the next sponsor will need to cover not only the master contract but also the corresponding amount for FlaBet .

Flamengo has gained a high-speed "reinforcement." Four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel received a club shirt autographed by Zico , the greatest idol in the club's history. The delivery took place last Monday (11), during the opening dinner of Rio Innovation Week.
Vettel, who retired from Formula 1 in 2022, is in Brazil to participate in the event that discusses technology and innovation with a focus on sustainability, a cause he embraced even before leaving the track . The event also features other athletes, such as gymnast Rebeca Andrade, who represents Flamengo .
Vettel isn't the only driver to wear the Sacred Mantle. Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, currently in Formula 1, appeared wearing the Flamengo jersey in a photo before his debut in the category. At the time, he had won a race in Austria in Formula 2.
On the current Formula 1 grid, Max Verstappen is a Vasco fan due to the influence of his father-in-law, three-time champion Nelson Piquet . Meanwhile, British driver Lando Norris received a Palmeiras jersey in 2023 and has adopted the jersey as his trademark ever since.
