Forward Paolo Guerrero, ex-Flamengo, was targeted by called the FGTS scam (Service Time Guarantee Fund). Fantástico, from TV Globo, detailed the scheme that diverted more than R$2 million from the Peruvian's benefit and that had other players as targets. Detailed case

Guerrero had R$2.3 million transferred from his FGTS to an account illegally opened in the player's name at a private bank. The account was opened on May 5, 2022 at a branch in the Bom Retiro neighborhood, in the center of São Paulo. On that date, the player was in the USA undergoing knee treatment.

The player's money was sent to the accounts of five people. The biometrics registration at the bank was done using a cell phone registered to the player's fake account. The Peruvian striker's lawyer said he received a call from a former driver saying that people who withdrew the amount wanted to return it.

In addition to Guerreiro, other players were victims of the scam, such as Elano, Cueva, Maikon Leite , Joao Rojas and Ramires. The Fantástico report reported that, for the PF investigation, the gang has been operating since 2014 and involves football businesspeople, bank employees, lawyers and former players. b>

According to the PF, the gang researches athletes who have recently left Inter. Then, with false documents and signatures, he accesses the fund and opens accounts in other banks. Finally, they move the diverted money to the orange account.

"Somehow they accessed the players' real documents to falsify them and open current accounts to receive these diverted FGTS resources", said Caio Porto Ferreira , PF delegate/Caixa-PF task force

Those involved

According to Fantástico, Gustavo Gonçalves de Barros received R$402.7 thousand. He is a partner in a company called FGL Marketing e Esporte.

His partner, football businessman Fernando Costa de Almeida, sent a power of attorney supposedly signed by Guerreiro to the company in an exchange of messages. According to the TV, the businessman hired a specialized office to investigate the social security situations of professional athletes and take care of transfers.

José Orlando de Almeida is also being investigated. He is the father of a third partner at FGL Marketing e Esporte and a relative of people who received FGTS amounts from the Peruvian player.

The police are still investigating the involvement of Sergio Rogério Melo da Costa in the scheme. In 2021, he was arrested for raping call girls and keeping them in private prison in Rio de Janeiro.

Sérgio's face was used in Guerrero's facial recognition process to open the account, and the Authorities are investigating the participation of a private bank employee. The photos of both were not compared in 2022.

Phases of the coup

The first phase of the coup targeted only Brazilian athletes. According to the police, a member of this gang, José Orlando de Almeida, already carried out the scam between 2014 and 2017. Elano, Maikon Leite and dozens of other athletes were affected.

Marcelo Silva, ex-Santos, is investigated as a facilitator of deviations in this 1st phase. His involvement in the case was not specified.

The second wave of scams only targets foreign players, but many did not register an incident. Cueva had a loss of R$318 thousand, while Joao Rojas lost R$585 thousand. Rojas' FGTS was withdrawn on March 9, 2022 and he has not yet been able to get the money back.

"Respect is the feeling..." Flamengo has Tite's words echoed behind the scenes with the fans

In an interview given after the defeat of Flamengoto Peñarol, 1-0, coach Tite was direct in responding to the boos received by the fans. The statement, marked by a frank tone, exposed the coach's pragmatic vision in relation to demanding fans and the pressure for results. “I respect the fans’ feelings. Of course I feel that (the boos), I'm human”, said Tite, recognizing the fans' frustration in the face of the setback.

Tite's speech reveals that he understands the role of fans as a fundamental part in the context of a club, especially in a team of great expression like Flamengo. By mentioning that the boos affect him as a human being, the coach demonstrates empathy, but does not fail to highlight that the only way to reverse this situation is with achievements on the field. “It can only be reversed in one way”, pointed out the coach.

THE MISTAKE THAT COSTED EXTREMELY DEARLY

The response reflects the experience of Titein dealing with pressure who follows the command of great teams in Brazilian football. With successful spells at clubs such as Corinthians, Grêmio and the Brazilian national team itself, the coach has a track record that puts him in a position to understand, perhaps like few others, the relationship between performance on the field and fans' expectations. For him, this connection is clear: “Do you know how to win fans? Do you know how I won over the fans of the other clubs I played for? Win an important title”, he declared.

The phrase highlights the centrality of titles in football, especially in mass clubs like Flamengo. In Brazil, the culture of results is intense, and Tite recognizes that fans have a limited tolerance for negative results. Winning titles, for him, is the key to gaining the support of the fans, and anything other than that results in discontent: “If not, bye.”

This last part of Tite's speech summarizes the characteristic impatience of demanding fans like Flamengo. The coach makes it clear that, without obtaining relevant trophies, the relationship with the fans deteriorates quickly. The pressure is constant and is part of the daily life of those who take on the leadership of top teams. Tite seems, however, to be aware of this scenario and how it needs to be faced.

Tite's statement came after a delicate moment for Flamengo. The defeat to Peñarol, at home, in a group stage match of the Copa Libertadores, raised alarm bells for fans and the coaching staff. Flamengo had high expectations for the season, especially after major reinforcements and the arrival of Tite, a coach with wide recognition on the national and international scene.

The pressure on Flamengo is nothing new. The club, which has one of the biggest fans in the world, is known for its high expectations for titles. The expensive squad, made up of renowned players, also increases this demand. Each stumble is widely covered by the media and amplifies the dissatisfaction of part of the fans, who demand immediate results.

CAN IT GO BAD AT THE MOMENT?

The Copa Libertadores, in particular, has a important meaning for Flamengo and its fans. The continental tournament is seen as one of the club's main objectives each season. Any result other than victory can generate dissatisfaction and pressure on the technical committee, as occurred after the setback against Peñarol.

In this context, Tite's speech not only recognizes the fans' dissatisfaction, but also is realistic in relation to what is expected from a club like Flamengo. The demand for titles is part of the package when taking over a club of this size, and the coach seems to be aware of this when he points out that he will only be able to win the support of the fans with significant victories.

The Federal Police (PF) investigates, within the scope of Operation Fake Agents, which was launched on Tuesday (28), whether more football players were victims of the gang that defrauded withdrawals than the Service Time Guarantee Fund (FGTS).

The investigation discovered that one of the victims of the coup was Peruvian Paolo Guerrero, formerly of Corinthians, Flamengo and Internacional. In 2022, a fake sports agent would have fraudulently withdrawn R$2.2 million from the attacker's account.

According to GloboNews, in addition to Guerrero, the PF is still investigating fraud in the FGTS of dozens of players. The names of other alleged victims, however, were not revealed. In Guerrero's case, the amount was initially deposited into an open account, also with falsified documents, in the player's name. Subsequently, a transfer was made to a sports marketing and career agency company for football players, belonging to one of those investigated.

In total, Fake Agents carried out six search and seizure warrants in Greater Greater São Paulo.

The name of the operation refers to an international awareness campaign about the dangers of fake agents, launched by former player Didier Drogba, Goodwill Ambassador of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Sports and Health.

The suspects will be accused of embezzlement, falsification of public documents, use of false documents and criminal association, with penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
