Lorrane Oliveira and Jade Barbosa are in the fight for leadership of the Brazilian Artistic Gymnastics Championship in the overall individual award. Rebeca Andrade and Flávia Saraiva are out of the competition for not having played on the ground. Flamengo's women's team has been dominating the competition, with the best scores on three different devices.

The Brazilian Artistic Gymnastics Championship began this Friday in Bahia, at the Lauro Freitas Arena. Representing Mengão, the four gymnasts made spectacular performances. On the ground, Jade Barbosa won the best score, and Lorrane was just behind in second place. And the great Olympic medalist, Rebeca Andrade, had the best score of the day both on the uneven bars (parallel) and on the balance beam.

Although the Flamengo team has great numbers, it is not a red-black team that leads the general individual competition. Andreza Lima accumulated a total score of 52,734 during the day on the four devices (floor, balance beam, parallel bars and vault). The gymnast got great marks in the different classifications, which puts her in first place.

However, our Lorrane is not far behind. The athlete totaled 52,634 and is in second place in the general classification, followed by Julia Soares. Jade Barbosa received 52,166 at the end of the day and could still make it to the podium. Rebeca and Flávia Saraiva are not competing in this modality, since the two stopped performing on the ground.

The competition is not over yet and this Sunday (20) the athletes return to the Lauro Freitas arena. You will know who is the champion of the individual when the sum of the scores of the two days of competition is carried out. So let's keep cheering for our girls!

Admission to follow the competition live is free, but if you're not in Salvador, no problem! The entire Championship is being broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation. Flamengo enters the stage at 14:00 and will have a classification until 16:55.

Diego Hypólito, one of the great athletes revealed by Flamengo's Olympic sports, commented on his relationship with the club in a long interview about his career. The two-time world champion gymnast and Olympic medalist began his successful career at the Gávea gymnasium and revealed that he harbors a feeling of gratitude, but still condemns the way in which he was sent away from the club.

“Flamengo is my trainer. It was there that I grew up, it gave me the opportunity, since I was a child, to have a sound system that was the best at the time. He was the one who believed my story. I was sent away by a specific person. So, I'm a laureate at Flamengo*, I vote, I help. I sometimes go to the club when I have some time”, he said in an interview with 'Abre Aspas', from ge.

Diego started training at Flamengo in 1994, as did his sister Daniele Hypólito, and He went through periods of ups and downs at the club. It was in Gávea where he became a national highlight, reached the Brazilian team and achieved international podiums. However, he was sent away between the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013.

One of the first actions of the Bandeira de Mello administration was to close several types of Olympic sports as part of the financial recovery plan. The contracts of many athletes, including Diego, were terminated. At the time, Diego gave many interviews criticizing the decision, but shows that he did not let it affect his relationship with the club.

But his departure had many serious consequences in Diego's life. At a time when he was dealing with the fact that he was beginning to admit his sexuality to himself, the athlete was sent away and began to deal with one of the most troubled scenarios of his life. He recently revealed that he was admitted to a psychiatric clinic in 2014 to treat depression, while juggling his training routine to compete in the Olympics.

“The Rio Olympics were very difficult for me, because I had a lot of psychological problems . I was denied a lot. I slept in a clinic, but I trained the other day, so I wasn't hospitalized full time, but I was taking a lot of medication to control my fears,” he said, before adding:

“I had all kinds of of claustrophobia after I left Flamengo. I was sent away from Flamengo. It was the club I coached for 20 years. The gym caught fire with equipment that had been obtained by my sponsor. I felt thrown away, it totally messed me up. And it was the time when I started to accept the issue of sexuality with myself, I started to give myself the opportunity to meet someone to date. Then I decide that I want to have a club. I stopped having the coach I had for 20 years (Renato Araújo). I closed with São Bernardo do Campo. My coach (Fernando de Carvalho Lopes) is accused of pedophilia. It was an avalanche of things, as if a tsunami had passed. And Diego in the middle of it, not knowing what to do, I was very lost, bewildered.”

* Laureate is a member who has been an individual champion for five consecutive years, competing for Flamengo; or one who has been champion for three consecutive or five alternate years, as long as Flamengo has also been champion in the sport competed in the same years by the athlete.
