With the end of the Libertadores group stage, it's time to plan the matches for the knockout stage of the competition, before the draw that will take place next Monday (3), at 1 pm (Brasília time), at CONMEBOL headquarters, in Luque (PAR). At this stage, the classic model of a knockout tournament applies: whoever loses, goes home and leaves the dream for later. Everything that Flamengo wants to leave alive for the time of continental decisions.
And Tite's team scored 10 points in 6 games in the competition, being the second in Group E, with the presence of Bolívar (BOL ), who was the leader of the group, Palestino (CHI) and Millonarios (COL). Last Sunday (29), Flamengo beat Athletico-PR 1-0 at Maracanã, ensuring their stay in the G-4 of the competition. The result was crucial in reducing the gap to the leader, Botafogo, which is now nine points. It is worth remembering that Mengão still has one game less, which could shorten the distance even further.
Playing at home, Rubro-Negro from Rio was superior on the field and carried out most of the offensive plays during the match. However, the winning goal only came 44 minutes into the second half, with Gerson, guaranteeing the three points for CRF. The triumph was essential for the team to remain among the top four in the table.
After winning the 28th round, Mengão now turns his attention to his next commitment in the Brazilian Championship. The team will face Bahia next Saturday (05), at 7pm (Brasília time), at Arena Fonte Nova, for the 29th round of the competition. Flamengo was eliminated from the Libertadores last Thursday (26), when they only had a goalless draw with Peñarol, but lost on aggregate. In this way, Mais Querido joined Palmeiras and broke a historic sequence. This is because, for the first time since 2017, none of the clubs are in the semi-finals of the competition.
With the draw with Peñarol, Mais Querido was eliminated in the quarter-finals, after losing 1 to 0 in the first match. On the other hand, Palmeiras fell to Botafogo in the round of 16, 4-3 on aggregate.
In this seven-year period, Rubro-Negro was a triple finalist in the Libertadores, winning two titles (2019 and 2022). In the current edition, Mais Querido reached the quarterfinals and fell to the round of 16 in three others. Palmeiras reached two decisions and won both (2020 and 2021). Furthermore, the alviverde team stopped in the semi-finals three times.
Eliminated from the Libertadores, Flamengo will only have two competitions to focus on: Copa of Brazil and Brasileirão. In the national knockout round, Rubro-Negro faces Corinthians in the semi-final. In the points competition, Flamengo needs to win again to get out of fourth place.
Flamengo and Athletico-PR meet face this Sunday (29), at 8pm, at Maracanã. The clash will be valid for the 28th round of the Brasileirão and around 20 thousand tickets have already been sold. The match will be broadcast live on Premiere.
