The Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro announced the creation of a committee responsible for overseeing the management of the iconic Maracanã Stadium. This measure will place under close observation the joint administration of the sports complex, carried out by Flamengo and Fluminense, generating a broad discussion on transparency in the management of sports facilities of public importance.
The decision, formalized in publication in the Official State Gazette this Wednesday (25), is based on the justification that "Maracanã is an important public facility and that its use must operate in favor of the entire community in consideration of the public interest". This argument places the community at the center of the discussion, highlighting the need for more rigorous scrutiny over the use of the stadium.
One of the main objectives of creating the Supervision Committee is to ensure the smooth running of stadium maintenance and its surroundings. This involves both the structural part of Maracanã and the surrounding areas that directly impact the experience of fans and the general public. It is important to note that this determination comes to light shortly after the renewal of the Term of Permission for Use (TPU) for Flamengo and Fluminense, extending the contract until the end of 2023. This indicates the State's desire to become more active in supervising the management of Maracanã, especially during the validity of this new TPU granted to the Fla-Flu duo.
The Government of Rio de Janeiro seeks to remain informed about any work or modifications carried out under the current administration of Maracanã. Furthermore, it intends to actively participate in planning and closely monitor the execution of the TPU. One of the Supervisory Committee's requirements is to have "access to detailed information on operational costs and expenses, covering days with or without an event, in order to promote continuous improvement of the management model and studies to reduce costs".
< The renewal of the TPU for Flamengo and Fluminense last week grants them the right to continue managing the Maracanã until December 31, 2023. However, the State of Rio de Janeiro has already outlined its plans for the stadium's future, aiming to establish a concession model for the next 20 years, with the definition scheduled for 2024. The current administrators, Flamengo and Fluminense, must face competition from Vasco da Gama and those responsible for Arena Mané Garrincha, in a process that promises to be full of challenges and discussions about the management of large-scale sports facilities.
The initiative of the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro to create the Supervision Committee for Maracanã demonstrates its determination to promote transparency, efficiency and provision of accounts in the administration of one of the most emblematic stadiums in Brazil. The decision to closely monitor the stadium's management and operational expenses signals a commitment to optimizing public resources and ensuring that Maracanã continues to serve the interests of the community and the general public. With the renewal of the TPU and plans for the future, the story of Maracanã continues to unfold, shaping the sporting landscape and infrastructure management in Rio de Janeiro.
Mengão midfielder is one of the highlights of the Brazilian Championship, but commentator says he wouldn't have the same success at Santos as the star

Back in Brazilian football, Neymar still divides opinions about his future at Santos . During a debate on ESPN Brasil, former player Zinho compared the Santos number 10 to Flamengo's Arrascaeta , which sparked disagreement from Zé Elias. The former Mengão player stated that the Uruguayan wouldn't be able to perform at the São Paulo club.
Zé Elias praises Flamengo's Arrascaeta in comparison to Neymar: "He works hard, he's a leader"
Zé Elias then responded, highlighting the difference in attitude between the two athletes: "But he won't be in the same position as Neymar, Zinho! He'll be much more involved in the game, he'll be a role model ... Neymar doesn't help. Neymar loses the ball and just watches. Arrascaeta doesn't do that. He works hard, he's a leader," he stated.
While Neymar is still looking for consistency, Arrascaeta continues to be one of Flamengo 's biggest stars in 2025. In addition to assists and creative plays, the Uruguayan has also taken on a leading role as a goalscorer.
Currently, the number 10 is Flamengo 's top scorer in the Brasileirão, with 13 goals. Last Sunday (14), he even scored one of the goals in the 2-0 victory over Juventude , in Caxias do Sul, which ended a 28-year drought.
With Arrascaeta available, Flamengo returns to the field this Thursday (18), for the first leg of the Libertadores quarterfinals, against Estudiantes (ARG). The match will be at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã , with broadcast by ESPN (closed TV) and Disney+ (streaming).

São Paulo takes the field seeking its first Women's Copa do Brasil title . The Tricolor team comes into this match after defeating Vasco 3-1 away from home in the previous round. In the Brazilian Championship, however, the São Paulo team was eliminated in the semifinals by Corinthians.
FLAMENGO MOMENT
Flamengo , in turn, thrashed Operário-MS 6-0 in the previous round , with Mariane scoring a hat trick. Despite their recent strong performance, Rosana Augusto's team was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the last Brazilian Championship after being defeated by Palmeiras.

With a poor performance away from home, the Argentine team tries to stop Mengão's momentum in the first leg of the Libertadores quarterfinals
16 Set 2025 | 18:59 |
Estudiantes faces Flamengo this Thursday (18), at 9:30 pm, at Maracanã, for the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores . The Argentine club arrives under pressure due to irregular results in the season and seeks to rediscover the good football of the beginning of the year to overcome one of the strongest teams in Brazil.
In 2025, the La Plata team played 36 matches, totaling 15 wins, eight draws, and 13 losses, with 42 goals scored and 40 conceded, a success rate of just over 49%. Away from home, the record is even more challenging: in 18 away matches, they have recorded just five wins, four draws, and nine losses.
On the other hand, Flamengo has maintained a solid performance at Maracanã , where they have lost only four times this season, only two of which have come against the main team. This makes the match even more difficult for the Argentine team, which will need to overcome one of the most intense atmospheres on the continent.
While performance away from La Plata is a concern, Estudiantes ' home record is positive. In 17 matches, they've won nine, drawn four, and lost four . This home strength could be an asset in the return leg, but first, the team needs to contain Flamengo 's momentum in Rio de Janeiro.
A traditional Libertadores champion, Estudiantes shares the title with River Plate as the most successful Argentine team in the competition and demonstrates experience in knockout stages. In the current edition, they lost only two matches in the group stage, against Universidad de Chile and Botafogo. In the round of 16, they eliminated Cerro Porteño after a 1-0 away win and a 0-0 draw in the return leg in La Plata.
