Flamengo insisted for months on signing Evander at the start of the season. The midfielder, who is currently at Portland Timbers (USA), agreed to return to Brazil. However, the Major League Soccer (MLS) team did not release it. The 25-year-old athlete did not rule out the possibility of wearing the Sacred Mantle in the future, even though it was revealed by Vasco.

— He was really interested, this is a football thing. When a proposal comes from a team like Flamengo, one of the biggest in Brazil if not the biggest, it arouses interest in us too. But it was a tough negotiation, it lasted a long time. Portland took a stand, wanted to keep me, they didn't want to release me. It was a tough, difficult negotiation, but it passed. Of course, during the negotiation period, your head changes. But today I'm focusing on helping Portland — said Evander, for the website '365 Scores', before talking about the chance to return to Brazil.

— I want to do my best here, everywhere I go I want to leave my name in the club's history. I did it at Vasco, in Denmark, I have good memories. Today, as I am here, I am trying to do my best this year and take the next step. I have dreams of going to a big club in Europe or Brazil. Being in a big football scene, where people are watching, to be able to wear the Seleção shirt again. I have goals, dreams and I will continue in search of them — added the midfielder.

Between December of last year and January 2024, Flamengo sought to sign Evander. The club even offered 7 million dollars (R$ 34 million, at the time) for part of the player's rights. However, even with the midfielder's desire to play for Mais Querido, Portland remained firm and did not release the athlete.

In 2024, Evander played six games, with four goals and two assists. In the six matches, the midfielder was a starter and played the full 90 minutes. The player only made his season debut in March, as he suffered an injury in the first months of the year.

Major League Soccer (MLS) has invested heavily in signing major international stars, such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Olivier Giroud, to increase the league's visibility. However, the name that has stood out the most this season is that of Brazilian Evander, 26 years old, revealed by Vasco and currently playing for Portland Timbers.

Evander occupies the top of the list of goal participations in the MLS, with 33 in 25 matches. The midfielder has already scored 15 goals, being the sixth highest scorer in the championship, and leads the assists, with 18 passes to goal. He surpasses names like Luciano Acosta, from Cincinnati, and even Messi, from Inter Miami, who only played 15 times this season.

FLAMENGO'S INTEREST AND EUROPE ON THE HORIZON

Recently, Mais Querido showed interest in counting on Evander's talent. Marcos Braz, vice-president of football at the Rio club, publicly defended the signing of the athlete. However, Portland Timbers turned down the proposal, after having spent 10 million euros to sign him from Midtjylland, in Denmark.

Evander, who recognizes Mengão's greatness, commented on the interest: “I was very happy to be remembered, especially by a club like Flamengo, one of the biggest in Brazil and America. Even though I have a history at Vasco, I wouldn’t be the first or the last to change rivals”, said the player. He also highlighted his desire to play for major European clubs and the Brazilian national team, although he recognizes the difficulties of making this transition directly from MLS.

CONSISTENCE IN MLS AND VOTING FOR THE ALL-STAR GAME

Evander's good performance in the MLS earned him the opportunity to play in the North American league's All-Star Game, where he was a starter. Despite the 4-1 defeat to the stars of the Mexican League, the feat is further proof of the player's relevance in the competition. He was accompanied by Gabriel Pec, from LA Galaxy, another Brazilian who also participated in the event.
