During the award ceremony for the Women's World Cup final, the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, kissed Jenni Hermoso, one of the country's national team players, on the lips. Since the episode, the president has been heavily criticized, with demands that Rubiales be punished. Finally, before more concrete decisions are taken, the president has been suspended for a period of 90 days.

The president was onstage at the FIFA awards after Spain beat England 1-0 in the final. In addition to the Spaniard, there were other dignitaries, such as Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, Queen Letizia of Spain and Anthony Albanese, Australian Prime Minister. When Jenni approached, Rubiales hugged the player and soon after took her face with both hands to kiss her.

Since then, fans and big names of the football have called for the resignation of the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. On Friday (25), amid calls for him to step down, Rubiales revealed that he did not intend to resign, as he had supposedly obtained the player's consent. The Federation has already convened an urgent meeting scheduled for next Monday (28) to analyze the president's case.

In her official statement, Jenni Hermoso confirmed that she was forcibly kissed: "I want to clarify that, as seen in the images, at no time did I consent to the kiss he gave me. I don't tolerate that my word is questioned, much less that words are invented that I didn't say". Hermoso's teammates joined the cause, and declared that they will not return to the Spanish national team until the president is punished.

Despite Jenni's pronouncement, the president of the Federation continues to deny his guilt, reinforcing that the kiss was consented by the player. On Saturday (26), the Spanish Federation said it would consider taking legal action against Hermoso to verify Rubiales' point of view. However, FIFA initiated disciplinary proceedings against the president this Thursday (24th) and two days later suspended Rubiales from participating in football events in Spain for the next 90 days.
