Flamengo faces Palmeiras this Sunday (21), at Allianz Parque, and the game valid for the Brazilian Championship tends to be another great test for the red and black defensive system. For journalist Eugênio Leal, from ESPN, the defense needs to be very attentive to the São Paulo team's new attacking style and the use of the aerial ball, a way in which Fla conceded goals in the first two rounds.
Abel did changes to the Palmeiras team to try to make the most of Endrick's characteristics, who mainly plays from right to midfield. Thus, Eugênio Leal highlights that the team no longer uses so many baseline plays and started looking for Veiga in a central position. The midfielder has the role of supplying the attackers with crosses, which most of the time look for Flaco López.
“Especially in this aerial ball that is not a set piece. Palmeiras has changed, they have played with the ball moving from the midfield into the area. Usually a pass from Veiga to four or five players who arrive in the penalty area. It could be Endrick, Flaco, Rony trying a bicycle”, began Eugênio Leal, before completing: area. It's a situation that Flamengo needs to be aware of too”, concluded the commentator, during the ESPN F360 program.
After beating Carioca without conceding goals, but being missed in two aerial ball plays in the first two rounds of Brasileiro, the red and black defense has a chance to show that moves were specific cases. Against Atlético-GO and São Paulo, the team conceded goals from two crosses from the left side of the defense.
Coach Tite believes that the two moves were different and do not demonstrate a problem with the defensive system when marking by high. The coach was asked about the topic after the victory over São Paulo and attributed the goal conceded to Allan's cramps during the play.
“Pressure on the man with the ball is very important. He (Allan) had a cramp and couldn't put pressure on Allison. The replacement followed soon after. In the previous game, we conceded a goal due to the opponent's merit. There was a lack of pressure on the ball man, it could and should have been better. But we had this physical problem”, said Tite.

With Flamengo in a financial position that allows it to sign players from Europe, rival fans have been calling for the creation of a spending cap in the Brasileirão . However, the CBF has already made it clear that it does not intend to limit how much each club can invest.
In an interview with ge, CBF consultant Cesar Grafietti explained that the most efficient model is the one that relates expenses and revenues , discarding a spending cap that is the same for all teams, but rather according to their investment capacity:
"Using the models we know from abroad, and which I think work best for football, it should always be a percentage ratio. With a defined cost, how much do you spend on payroll, investment, and hiring in relation to the club's revenue ? We have to remember that I can't make unequals equal. A club that makes R$1 billion has earned its way to that figure. So I can't make a club that makes R$1 billion spend the same as a club that makes R$200 million.
Cesar Grafietti on Financial Fair Play limiting Flamengo's investments: "It's unfair to those who managed to grow and restructure themselves"
Grafietti also highlighted that limiting investments by clubs like Flamengo , Palmeiras and Corinthians, which already exceed the R$1 billion mark in revenue, would be unfair: " Why say they can only spend R$200 or R$300 million because a regional club or a small city can only make that much in revenue? It's unfair to those who have managed to grow and restructure themselves."
Unlike the spending cap, the CBF is working to implement financial fair play starting in 2026. The goal isn't to equalize investments among clubs, but to ensure that no one spends more than they earn: "The financial fair play model has a single, basic objective: to ensure that clubs pay their bills on time. It won't balance competition, nor will it make everyone spend the same amount."
The consultant explained that, in the long term, the model increases competitiveness, as it attracts players and sponsors to clubs with balanced finances. He cited the examples of Palmeiras and Flamengo, which excelled precisely after achieving financial sustainability .
The CBF's statements bring relief to Flamengo, which already meets the parameters of financial fair play . The club has remained sustainable since the restructuring began in 2013, and therefore is not at risk of facing restrictions when the model is implemented.
