Formed in Flamengo's youth categories, striker Mateusãowas the protagonist in an exciting duel this Sunday (29), for the UAE League Cup. Defending Shabab Al-Ahli, led by Paulo Sousa, Portuguese who played for Mais Querido in 2022, the young Brazilian scored the decisive goal in the 5-5 draw against Al-Nasr, guaranteeing his team's qualification for the semi-finals of the competition.
A game full of twists
Mateusão's team had won the first game 2-0, which gave them a comfortable advantage in the confrontation. In the second leg, away from home, Shabab Al-Ahli started dominating, opening 2-0 with goals from Cartabia and Dabbur. At halftime, the aggregate score was 4-0, but the second half brought a series of emotions.
Al-Nasr reacted, with Taarabt reducing the score, but Dabbur b>scored again to make it 3-1. An own goal from defender Renan gave new impetus to the home team, who saw Dabbur complete his hat-trick and make it 4 to 2.
Al-Nasr's comeback came with two goals from Marouan Azarkan and one from Ali Mabkhout, putting the score at 5 to 4 and leaving the hosts one goal away from leveling the match on aggregate. At 20 years old, Mateusão is enjoying his second season with Shabab Al-Ahli. In the current campaign (2024/2025), the striker played 17 games, scoring five goals and contributing one assist.
At Flamengo, the young man played for the main team between 2021 and 2023, accumulating 18 official matches, but without breaking the bank. He debuted as a professional in the first round of the Campeonato Carioca 2021, in a 1-0 victory over Nova Iguaçu.
Shabab Al-Ahli's next challenges
With classification assured, Shabab Al-Ahli awaits the definition of the other semi-finalists, who will be announced this Monday (30), with clashes between Baniyas x Al Wasl and Al-Jazira x Al Ain.

Estudiantes announced this Monday (15) two confirmed absences for the match against Flamengo , valid for the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores. The match is scheduled for this Thursday, at Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro . The return game will be held seven days later, in Argentina.
The first player to be out is 33-year-old defender González Pírez , a River Plate youth product. The defender suffered a Grade 3 hamstring injury in his right thigh and is expected to be out for at least a month , ruling him out of both matches against the red-and-blacks.
Without further ado, coach Eduardo Domínguez confirmed that Santiago Núñez will replace González Pírez . The defender had already replaced his injured teammate in the match against River Plate and scored Estudiantes' only goal in the 2-1 defeat.
The club expects to maintain defensive consistency even without its regular starter . The Argentine coach has emphasized in previous interviews the importance of maintaining tactical discipline to balance the match against Flamengo at Maracanã.
In attack, 27-year-old Colombian Edwuin Cetré is also out of the match in Rio de Janeiro. The forward suffered a grade 1 muscle injury to the biceps femoris in his left leg . He is expected to be available for the return leg on September 25th.
The La Plata club's representative reinforced Mengão's glaring economic difference, but remains confident of qualifying for the semi-finals of the competition.

This Thursday (18), Flamengo begins the dispute of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores against Estudiantes, at Maracanã. On the eve of the confrontation, the president and idol of the Argentine club, Juan Sebastián Verón, spoke about the expectations for the duel against Rubro-Negro.
During an institutional event in La Plata, Verón highlighted the financial difference between the teams , with Mengão being the team with the highest market value among the tournament participants, but recalled Estudiantes ' tradition of overcoming opponents considered favorites.

With the result in Caxias do Sul, Flamengo beat Juventude again away from home after almost 28 years . The last victory had been on October 1, 1997, 1-0, with an own goal by Rodrigo Costa. Since then, Flamengo has accumulated six draws and seven losses at the Rio Grande do Sul stadium.
Now, Flamengo turns its focus to the Copa Libertadores. The next match will be this Thursday (18), against Estudiantes (ARG), at 9:30 pm (Brasília time) , at Maracanã, for the first leg of the quarterfinals. Mengão wants to get a victory with a large score to be more comfortable in the return leg.
