With the defeat to Palestino, last Tuesday (7), Flamengo, coached by Tite, left the Group E classification zone for the round of 16 of the Libertadores 2024. The result, in addition to leaving the atmosphere with the heavier crowd, resulted in a negative mark for the team.
With the 4 points gained in the first 4 games, the club managed to equal the two worst campaigns of this century in the group stage: only in 2002 and 2014 saw similar situations. On both occasions, Rubro-Negro ended up being eliminated at this stage.
In 2002, led by Carlos Alberto Torres, the Nation saw its team finish at the bottom of its group, with rivals Once Caldas -COL, Universidad Católica-CHI and Olimpia-PAR who ended up being the champion in that edition. With just 1 win and 1 draw, they finished with 4 points and bowed out early. However, with a difference that could weigh in favor of Rubro-Negro this year, 22 years ago, the club played its last two matches away from home and ended up defeated in Chile and Paraguay, this year, it decides at Maracanã against Bolívar and Millonarios.
10 years ago, with Jayme de Almeida as the current coach, and with the same Bolívar in the group, in addition to León-MEX and Emelec-EQU, Flamengo had a better campaign than in 2002, reached the last round with 7 points and saw classification slip away at home, losing to the Mexican club, in a busy 3-2 game. Furthermore, just like today, Bolívar led the group and ended up reaching the semi-finals of the competition, only falling to the champion, San Lorenzo.
This year Flamengo still has 2 games to go, both in house, against Bolívar and Millonarios. In addition to not depending solely on themselves, Flamengo needs a combination of results and their main rival is Palestino, who must fight for the 2nd place, since Bolívar is already virtually classified.

After a low-key stint in Europe, Reinier, a product of Ninho do Urubu, is back in Brazil. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the attacking midfielder has already said goodbye to Real Madrid and has reached an agreement with Atlético-MG . The player is expected in Belo Horizonte in the coming days, where he will undergo medical examinations and sign a contract . The contract will be for four and a half years, the newspaper revealed.
Talks between Reinier and Atlético-MG began in June, when the Minas Gerais club launched an inquiry and received a positive response from the player. The initial proposal, a loan with an option to buy, was met with Real Madrid's demand for financial compensation.
As the window progressed, negotiations resumed and culminated in a definitive agreement. In recent weeks, the player had been training with Real Madrid's B team , but according to Marca, he was no longer part of the club's plans.
Before signing with Atlético-MG— Flamengo 's opponent in the Copa do Brasil round of 16—Reinier was speculated as a potential reinforcement for the Rubro-Negro. According to journalist Mauro Cezar Pereira, the Rio de Janeiro club made an inquiry but backed off due to the high costs of the deal.
The decision not to move forward involved not only the contract value, but also the high commissions demanded by the player's representatives— deemed incompatible with the player's current situation . As a result, Flamengo turned its attention to Lucas Beltrán, from Fiorentina.
Reinier arrived at Real Madrid in 2020, surrounded by high expectations, but failed to establish himself at the Spanish club. Unlike Vini Jr., also formerly of Flamengo, and Rodrygo, the midfielder never even played a match at the Santiago Bernabéu .
Over the past five years, he has spent time on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Granada, and, most recently, Frosinone in Italy— where he enjoyed his best spell since leaving Brazil . In total, he has played 105 matches, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.
