Sentenced to more than 20 years in prison, Bruno's dreams of glory seemed to have disappeared. However, this is not where his story ends. Against all odds, the former goalkeeper managed to free himself from prison in 2017 and embarked on a remarkable journey back, determined to reclaim his place in the sport he loves.

In the late 2000s, Bruno was a rising star on the Brazilian football scene. As Flamengo's starting goalkeeper, he played a key role in the club's victory in the 2009 Brasileirão, cementing his status as one of the country's brightest talents. His performances on the field caught the attention of the national team selectors and he was widely tipped to represent Brazil at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

However, Bruno's promising career was abruptly derailed in July 2010, when the Eliza Samudio case came to light. The shocking revelations of his involvement in the disappearance and alleged murder of his former lover, who was also the mother of his son, have sent shockwaves through the Brazilian football community. Flamengo promptly terminated his contract and the goalkeeper found himself at the center of a high-profile legal battle that would change the trajectory of his life.

Despite the enormous odds stacked against him, Bruno refused to give up on his dreams . After serving a significant part of his sentence, he was granted habeas corpus in 2017, which allowed him to be released from prison. This marked the beginning of his remarkable comeback journey as he sought to re-establish himself in the world of professional football.

One of the most intriguing chapters of Bruno's comeback story was his close association with Vasco da Gama, Flamengo's fierce rival. In 2017, the former goalkeeper revealed that he had negotiated with the club, facilitated by then president Eurico Miranda. This unexpected development added an extra layer of intrigue to his journey, as he contemplated the possibility of donning the colors of a historic adversary.

“I came out of habeas corpus in 2017 wanting to be more at home with my family and didn't even think about playing football again. I started receiving several calls, invitations from clubs. Out of nowhere, a call from Rio de Janeiro appeared and I answered, it was Eurico Miranda making me the proposal to go to Vasco”, said the former goalkeeper

With the new freedom, Bruno decided to rebuild his career, determined to prove that he still had the skills and determination to compete at the highest level. He played for several clubs, including Boa Esporte, Poços de Caldas, Rio Branco-AC and Atlético Carioca, showing his resilience and adaptability.

In July 2021, Bruno announced his retirement of professional football, ending a career marked by triumphs and tragedies. Reflecting on his journey, the former goalkeeper acknowledged the mistakes of his past and expressed a desire to use his experience to inspire and guide others who may be facing similar challenges.

Flamengo returns to the field on Wednesday (22) to decide life in the Brazilian Cup. With the Brasileirão paralyzed, Rubro-Negro has the 'decision' for the Brazilian Cup as its next commitment. With an eye on the game against Amazonas, Mengo defined the schedule until the trip to Manaus.

After the victory over Bolívar last Wednesday (15), the squad had a day off on Thursday (16) and reappeared this Friday afternoon (17). Now, the players will have daily training until the eve of the match with Amazonas, on the 22nd.

SEE FLAMENGO SCHEDULE

Saturday (18) – training at 9am

Sunday (19) – training at 9am

Monday (20) – training at 9am

Tuesday (21) – training at 9am and travel to Manaus

Wednesday (22) – Amazonas x Flamengo at 9:30 pm

Without the game against Vasco on Saturday (18), postponed by the CBF due to the chaos in Rio Grande do Sul, the Flamengo has five consecutive days of training. Therefore, Tite has time to 'sharpen' the team until the 'decision' in the third phase of the Copa do Brasil. p>

Flamengo and Amazonas face each other at Arena da Amazônia in the second leg of the third phase. This is because, in the first leg, at Maracanã, Rubro-Negro won 1-0. Therefore, the match in Manaus still has the match open.

As they have the advantage of one goal, Flamengo can draw to advance to the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. However, a simple defeat for the Manaus team takes the dispute to penalties. However, if Fla is beaten by two goals or more, Amazonas will qualify.

FORMER FLAMENGO PLAYER REMEMBERS MOMENTS AT THE CLUB AFTER GOALKEEPER BRUNO'S CASE IN 2010

Hired as a weight booster, the former striker remembers the atmosphere after the athlete's arrest

Flamengo lives with crises off the field almost naturally, but the scenario at the beginning of the last decade was very different from what players experience. Starting goalkeeper, Bruno was arrested for the murder of Eliza Samudio, and the case generated consequences for Gávea. The one who remembers the turbulent day to day life at the club is striker Diogo, who arrived at the club in 2010 shortly after his arrest.

“It's fantastic, a fantastic thing (Flamengo fans). Of course, the team wasn't doing so well at that time. There was a demand and it was a very complicated year for Flamengo. I arrived and 10 days before the Bruno case had happened, when he was arrested”, began the former player in participation in the program 'Zona Mista do Hernan', on UOL.

Diogo arrived at the club in end of July, two weeks after the arrest and with the crisis already established. The athlete stated that he does not remember anyone talking about the subject even once, not athletes, managers or other employees. He understands that the decision, at least by the players, was intended to protect the team in an attempt not to worsen the crisis that was already huge on the field.

“No one would talk about the subject. As the moment was no longer good, it seemed that they were not talking about how the group could defend itself and protect itself (shield) from the moment that was not good on the field and even worse outside. And it was natural, it wasn’t something we agreed on ‘don’t say anything about that’. I don't remember bringing up the subject or having anything said.”

The strategy didn't work out very well, as Flamengo finished the Brazilian Championship in 14th place with 44 points, just two more than the first relegated Vitória. Diogo, on the other hand, was unable to establish himself in the red-black team and returned to his club after the end of his loan. But he suggests that the scenario influenced his football.

“At the same time it was very cool to play for Flamengo, but it was a year when there was a change of coach, in the case of Bruno. It was a 'combo' that year”, said the striker who played just 17 games with Manto Sagrado.
