After writing a story of growth, struggle and overcoming challenges with a completely renewed squad, Sesc RJ Flamengo will bet on the integration of the same base for the 2023/2024 season. Biggest winner of Brazilian volleyball with 12 Superliga titles, coach Bernardinho's team renewed with 11 athletes, with emphasis on Canadian setter Brie King and North American spiker Roni.
In addition to the foreigners who delighted the crowd in the last Superliga, when Sesc RJ Flamengo was one point away from the final, their contracts were extended for another season by liberos Lais and Marcelle, central Juciely, Valquíria and Juju, opposite Sabrina, and wingers Michelle, Gabiru and Helena. “Our history is always to maintain a strong base, aligned with our values and accustomed to the work we develop. The last season ended up being atypical precisely because we had an almost entirely new cast, but the group showed its strength and dedication. We conquered Carioca and were again very close to another Superliga final. It ended up not happening and in order to take that leap, we are going to do what we know best: work hard”, summarized Bernardinho.
The group should still have other reinforcements, but the priority is the formation of a committed, disciplined team and, as the 'commander' said, willing to work hard. Questions that match perfectly with the style of the always smiling Brie King.
"It was an easy decision to return to Rio next season. The team has become my family and I can't wait to be around people so amazing for another year. I'm really happy with the player and person I became last season and I can't wait to continue learning and growing as a player. The sky's the limit for our team," said Brie King. p>
Prepared for its 14th consecutive season under the command of Bernardinho, the central and captain Juciely guarantees that there will be no lack of willingness to seek even greater achievements. She believes that previous preparation can be an important factor in the search for the desired results.
"When I got here, I never imagined that I would reach my 14th season in a row. It's been many years and I feel very sorry. well, it became my home. Of course, the pain increased, but we continue with the same desire to evolve and win titles with this shirt. We are going for another year, this time with the squad almost entirely renewed, which I am sure that will favor us. We will start the work and, little by little, get into the rhythm again", guarantees Juciely.
The carioca Lais brought back great memories of her first season at Sesc RJ Flamengo. In addition to having had the opportunity to play in front of her family, she showed evolution on the court and was awarded with the call-up to the Brazilian National Team, which disputes the League of Nations. After commitments with the national team, she hopes to keep growing at the club.
"I am very happy to have renewed the contract. I think it was an important step for my career last season. I've always wanted to go back to live in Rio, and still be led by Bernardo. I feel like I've evolved in many ways. We had a very beautiful season, with a lot of resilience, unity and now we have everything to do more and better, with a group that has already knows and knows where it can go," said libero Laís.
Sesc RJ Flamengo will have three competitions this season: the Campeonato Carioca, Copa Brasil and the Superliga.

The headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), in Rio de Janeiro, was the target of a Federal Police operation on Wednesday morning (30). The agents carried out a search and seizure warrant related to Operation Caixa Preta, which investigates alleged electoral crimes committed in Roraima. The president of the entity, Samir Xaud, was one of the targets.
CBF releases statement on the case: "The operation has no relation whatsoever with the CBF or Brazilian football"
Despite the police presence, nothing was seized, according to the CBF itself. The organization also stated, in an official statement, that the director " is not the focus of the investigation " and that the operation has no connection with football or the confederation.
According to the Federal Police, the operation focused primarily on Federal Deputy Helena Lima (MDB-RR), whose deputy is Samir Xaud in the Chamber . She is suspected of involvement in a vote-buying scheme. Ten search and seizure warrants were executed, and R$10 million was frozen in the accounts of those under investigation.
The investigation began during the 2024 municipal elections, when businessman Renildo Lima, the parliamentarian's husband, was arrested with R$500,000 in cash , part of which was hidden in his underwear. According to sources close to Samir Xaud, PF agents remained at the CBF headquarters for about 30 minutes. No material was seized during the operation.
In an official statement, the CBF declared: "The operation has no connection with the CBF or Brazilian football, and president Samir Xaud is not the focus of the investigation. The entity has not received any official information about the subject of the investigation . No equipment or materials were taken by the agents. The president remains calm and at the disposal of the authorities for any clarification."

Two young Brazilians on the rise on the international sports scene have demonstrated mutual admiration : 20-year-old driver Gabriel Bortoleto, in his debut season in Formula 1 with Sauber, and 18-year-old tennis player João Fonseca , who competes on the ATP professional circuit.

In an interview with the official F1 website, Bortoleto was asked what career he would pursue if he weren't a driver. His response was good-natured: "I admire a Brazilian, João Fonseca . He's incredible. He's climbing the ATP rankings, and I think he'll be a future star ."
Despite his admiration for tennis, the Brazilian admitted that his experience in the sport is still limited. "Tennis is fascinating, I love watching it and I like the players' mentality , but I don't play it often. I play a lot of padel, but I need to start playing real tennis."
When asked where he sees himself in five years, Bortoleto was blunt: " I'd like to be world champion ." According to him, being in F1 is already part of that process: "The best drivers in the world are here. I've always wanted to be here precisely to fight against them and, who knows, become the best one day."

Bortoleto also revealed his closeness with current four-time world champion Max Verstappen. " Max and Ollie Bearman are the two guys I'm closest with in the paddock . I started playing video games with Max, and then we started training together on the simulator, back in the Formula 3 days."
According to the Brazilian, this friendship has evolved, and today the two share time off the track. " We have a group of friends with whom we play simulators . I'm even an ambassador for his team, Team Redline. Since then, we've spent a lot of time together—and it's been a lot of fun."
