It was on June 13, 2023 that Olivinha , at the age of 41, officially ended his career as a professional athlete. The farewell took place at the Pedrocão Gymnasium, in Franca, in the game that sealed the NBB title for the home team. The 69-59 victory over Flamengo did not take away the shine of the moment: the number 16 was applauded by everyone, including the players of the rival team.
A year later, Olivinha relived the feeling of that night. In a nostalgic post, the former player shared images of the match and reflected on the end of a cycle . In the same year of his farewell, Olivinha was honored with a bust during Flamengo's anniversary , which sealed his name once and for all among the great idols in the club's history.
The event was filled with emotion, marked by a sincere statement from the former athlete about what it meant to have played for the Red-Black team. Over the course of 12 consecutive seasons with Flamengo, Olivinha cemented his name as one of the greatest players in the modern era of Brazilian basketball. He participated in the NBB 16 times, scored more than 7,000 points and played a total of 564 games, an absolute record at that time.
In terms of rebounds, the former player also reached another historic milestone. He was just a few numbers away from reaching 4,000, which reinforces his tactical importance and leadership on the court. He was always recognized for his dedication, reading of the game and his fundamental role in the club's titles. Since his retirement, only three athletes have surpassed the number of games he set in the NBB: Larry Taylor, from Caxias do Sul; Alex, from Bauru; and Jhonathan Luz, from Flamengo. The latter, in fact, became the new record holder, with 587 games, according to the most recent data from the National League.
The decision to retire came after a combination of factors. The physical pain — which had already been bothering him — added to the desire to be closer to his family, weighed heavily. According to Olivinha himself, it was time to start a new stage in his life with more presence at home. Despite having retired in a season that ended in defeat, Flamengo still won two important titles in 2023/2024: the Super 8 Cup and the Champions League of the Americas. In the national competition, Rubro-Negro beat Franca in the semifinals and beat Minas in the final.
The player arrived with promising status after great performances in Argentina and Sergio Hernández did not mince words in praising his talent.
