The game between Flamengo and Palmeiras, in the 3rd round of the Brasileirão, is scheduled for 4pm (Brasília time) this Sunday (21). However, the duel between the teams already started before the ball even rolled. After all, if the traditional rivalry between the teams wasn't enough, coach Abel Ferreira even spiced up the atmosphere by needling Fla.
The situation occurred last Wednesday (17), after Palmeiras' defeat to International. Shortly after the game, at a press conference, Abel was asked about the match against Flamengo. In response, the Portuguese coach said: “What do they have? There's more money than Palmeiras to buy ready-made players. Just that". At another point, Abel also stated:
– I think Palmeiras can compete with Flamengo because we are organized, we are structured. We've been playing together for the longest time. If we are going to compete with budget, with financial capacity, there is no way to compete. Because they are three or four times more than us. Palmeiras does a lot with the resources they have.
It is worth highlighting, however, that Abel Ferreira's statement does not match reality. After all, Palmeiras' total revenue in 2023 was close to R$1 billion, while Fla's reached R$1.3 billion. Therefore, the numbers prove that, despite Flamengo's superiority in finances, the amount does not even come close to the amount mentioned, with “three or four times more”.
Although the Brasileirão is only in the third round, the Palmeiras x Flamengo is already seen as some kind of decision. This is because the two teams are treated as favorites for the competition title. Until then, Fla is better, with 100% success and ending the previous round in the lead. Meanwhile, the São Paulo team has one defeat and one victory, occupying 13th position.

Flamengo begins its journey towards the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores this Thursday (18) . The first leg against Estudiantes (ARG) will be held at Maracanã, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), and will have a full house.
All tickets were sold in advance, guaranteeing an estimated attendance of around 69,000. The expectation is that the Red-Black Nation will fill every section of the stadium , transforming the Maracanã into a cauldron to push the team toward victory.
The team will have important reinforcements. Striker Bruno Henrique and full-back Varela , who were absent last Sunday (14) against Juventude, in the Brazilian Championship , trained normally this Tuesday (16) and should be available to the coach again.
