Flamengo will have to deal with a new dispute off the court. Gustavinho, the former coach of the red-and-black basketball team and a multiple champion , has taken the club to the Civil Court of Rio de Janeiro, demanding payment of R$723,348 in severance pay . He considers the coach's dismissal, which took place in February 2025, to be abrupt and without justification. Flamengo's legal stability gained a new chapter this week.
According to a column by journalist Ancelmo Gois in the newspaper O Globo, coach Gustavo de Conti, known as Gustavinho, has filed a lawsuit against the club, alleging unilateral breach of contract. The claim is around R$723,348, which is set out as a fine in a contractual clause linked to image rights. The coach, who was fired in February of this year, claims that the decision was made exclusively by the club and was carried out without prior notice or formal justification.
In the petition filed, Gustavinho's lawyers point to what they call "abusive and unbalanced clauses." According to the defense, the contract provided for the payment of a fine only in the event of termination by the coach — without any penalty if the termination was initiated by Flamengo. The central argument is that this condition violates provisions of the Civil Code, the General Sports Law and also goes against recent decisions by the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), which have reinforced the protection of contractual balance in relations between professionals and sports entities.
Despite the dispute, Gustavinho's time at Flamengo has been marked by significant achievements. Leading the team since 2018, the coach participated in one of the most successful phases of Flamengo basketball. Although he has won numerous titles, his performance in recent seasons has caused internal and external discomfort. Part of the fans were already showing dissatisfaction with the team, which had not been repeating the dominant performances of other years.
Pressure mounted on Gustavinho, and the board decided to change the team. In February 2025, the coach was officially dismissed, ending a seven-year stint in charge of the team. To replace Gustavinho, Flamengo chose a big name on the international scene: Sergio Hernández , better known as “Oveja”. The Argentine is a former coach of the Argentine national team and arrives with the mission of keeping FlaBasquete among the top teams in the country and on the continent.
