Flamengo's first Basketball World Cup title completed 9 years last Thursday (28). The trophy was won at home and with an invasion of fans onto the court to celebrate with the players. The team's coach at the time, José Neto, gave an interview to Garrafão Rubro Negro where he told the behind-the-scenes of the achievement.

José Neto said that the achievement only happened because of the victorious spirit that infected all the players. He recognized the difficulty of overcoming Maccabi Electra, from Israel, who beat Real Madrid in the Euroleague, but that this only added value to Mais Querido's achievement.

“This team had a VALUE: IT HAD THE SPIRIT OF VICTORY! We knew the potential of the Maccabi team, current Euroleague champions beating Real Madrid in the Final. So that was a motivation for us to make history. Beating an opponent of this magnitude would put us in the history of the sport 'with flying colors'”, says Neto.

In addition, he recalled the other part of the players' motivation, saying that it came from the messages received by the cast coming from family and fans. Neto also says that the players should take advantage of the opportunity they were having and make the Nation's dream come true.

“That's why, what I said in the lecture was the same thing I told them every day: no Just have the opportunity, you need to take advantage of this opportunity and make your dream come true! I said that there were a lot of people out there who were there for us, but that there were some special people who were with us every day supporting us and believing in our achievements! We had some notes from people in our family, children, wives, parents, brothers, who were our inspirations to do our best every day. That we could do for them that day”, he adds.

José Neto concluded by quoting the memorable part of the Mais Querido anthem and also praised the Rubro Negros fans who made all the difference in winning the titles that year. He says that everything will remain forever in his memory and that he will be eternally grateful for all the affection.

“I believe in the essence of things and people. Flamengo has in its essence, victory! Win, Win, Win! When we wear this shirt and are part of this Nation, we acquire this essence that stays forever! Therefore, having been part of this club and having managed to help basketball become the ‘pride of the Nation’ will remain forever in my memory. This crowd is special! We won many games and championships being pushed by these people who spared no effort to see Flamengo perform with its essence of Grit, Love and Passion to win! I will be eternally grateful for all the affection and recognition that this Nation has for our work”, concludes Neto.

FlaBasquete, the current Champions League Americas champion, begins its quest for a third world championship this Thursday (18). With titles won in 2014 and 2022, the red-black team arrives at the 2025/26 season with the clear objective of repeating the feat in Singapore and consolidating itself as a global basketball powerhouse.

To achieve this goal, Flamengo formed a revamped squad, blending experienced players with promising young talents who embody the club's winning DNA. Argentine coach Sérgio Hernández, known as "Oveja," took over the team midway through last season and has already won the Champions League Americas.

STRATEGIC REINFORCEMENTS

FlaBasquete invested heavily to strengthen its roster. Among the reinforcements are Daniel Onwenu (formerly of Corinthians), Argentine Franco Baralle (formerly of Pinheiros), Wesley Castro, and Eric Buckner . The arrival of Dee Bost, an American point guard who became a naturalized Bulgarian, was a response to Baralle's injury, as he suffered an accident and will be out for the season.

With experience and versatility, Bost arrives to be a leader in decisive moments . Despite the departures of key players like Franco Balbi and Gallizzi, expectations are high for the team's performance at the World Cup.
