The Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation (FERJ) is meeting with the state's main clubs this Wednesday (11) to define important changes to the Campeonato Carioca . Among the central points of the meeting is the reformulation of the competition's format , which should be reduced to just ten dates — a number much lower than the current 15 matches played by teams that reach the final stages.
In addition to the change in format, FERJ is expected to define the schedule for the 2026 Campeonato Carioca this Wednesday. The entity already has a preferred model, but intends to listen to the clubs before making any official decision . Current two-time state champion, Flamengo was the main organizer of the movement to reduce the calendar.
The initiative for a new model came from Flamengo itself, which presented a proposal to FERJ in April to restructure the State Championship calendar. The red-and-black project envisaged reducing the number of dates from 15 to ten — exactly what is being discussed at the current meeting . In previous meetings, the clubs had also outlined a new format for the 2026 edition.
The proposal under analysis foresees that the 12 clubs will be divided into two groups of six . Unlike the current format in which all teams face each other in a points-based system, in this new configuration, the teams in group A would play against those in group B.
The top four teams in each group would advance to the quarter-finals, which would be played in a single match. The semi-finals would be played in home and away matches, while the final would be played in a single match .
The FERJ initiative also responds to a requirement from the Brazilian Football Confederation. During his inauguration, the new president of the CBF, Samir Xaud, announced that the State Championships should be limited to a maximum of 11 dates starting in 2026. To adapt, FERJ decided to go further and seek an even leaner format, with only ten games, considering the tight schedule of the upcoming seasons.

The Italian press has once again mentioned Taty Castellanos as a target for Flamengo, but internal sources confirm that the board is not in talks with the Lazio player. According to an investigation by Gazeta do Urubu , major signings would only happen if there was an unexpected departure or serious injury to a starter.
The obstacle is related to the punishment imposed on the Roman club, which received a transfer ban for failing to meet financial requirements. The measure prevents the registration of new players until September , making immediate replacements impossible in the event of departure negotiations.
Castellanos , who played 40 games last season and 46 the previous season , is seen as a strategic part of the squad. President Claudio Lotito assured coach Maurizio Sarri that there would be no more losses in the squad. The promise was reaffirmed by sporting director Angelo Fabiani: "I shook the coach's hand twice," he told the Italian newspaper.

The probable Colorado lineup includes: Rochet; Aguirre, Vitão, Juninho and Bernabei; Thiago Maia, Alan Rodríguez, Tabata, Alan Patrick and Wesley; Ricardo Mathias.

After Wednesday's clash, Rubro-Negro and Colorado will face each other again on August 20th , at the same time, in Porto Alegre, at the Beira-Rio stadium. Between Libertadores matches, the teams will play on Sunday, for the Brasileirão, also on Rio Grande do Sul soil.
