Flamengo and Neymar meet again on the field this Wednesday (16), at 8 pm, at Vila Belmiro, for the 14th round of the Brasileirão . The duel marks the reunion of Rubro-Negro with the star after 12 years. The last confrontation between them was in 2013, in his last match for Santos before transferring to Barcelona.
While reunions on the field are rare, off it, Flamengo and Neymar have flirted over the past decade . The striker, an openly Flamengo fan, has repeatedly expressed his desire to wear the club's jersey. Behind the scenes, the board considered the possibility, but the deal never progressed.
In January of this year, Neymar terminated his contract with Al-Hilal (SAU) and became a free agent. For four days before being announced by Santos , the striker's name was debated internally at Gávea. Filipe Luís and the executive director of football, José Boto, weighed the pros and cons.
On the positive side, there was his unquestionable technical quality, global media impact, and marketing potential. However, his physical condition (only 15 games played in two years and recovery from a torn knee ligament) , his desire to sign for only six months, and a salary above the squad's salary limit—at Santos, before his contract renewal, Neymar was receiving R$4.1 million per month.

Age wasn't a problem, as the athlete was about to turn 33 , the same age as other signings like Jorginho. Filipe and Boto consulted with Jorge Jesus, Neymar's former coach at Al-Hilal, but decided not to pursue the deal.
"We can't focus exclusively on a month-long competition. Bringing a player just for the World Cup didn't even cross our minds . It would do more harm than good for the team," Boto said in a press conference on June 12. "From my side, there was no approach to Neymar," he added.
In an interview earlier this year, Neymar said that choosing between Flamengo and Santos was like choosing between reason and heart . After talking with his family, the player decided to return to the club that had nurtured him. The idea was simple: to feel at home, regain rhythm, and play with joy again.
Despite Neymar scoring four goals and providing one assist against Flamengo, the team's record is favorable to the Red-Blacks . In six meetings, the Rio de Janeiro team won two, drew three, and lost only once, in 2012.
Victory over Internacional in the Libertadores puts Mengão above the main teams in European football, such as the Spanish team and the French champions.

Flamengo achieved an impressive feat under Filipe Luís. With the 2-0 victory over Internacional , this Wednesday (20), at Beira-Rio, the club reached 43 triumphs since October 2024 , becoming the team with the most victories in the world in that period.
Rubro-Negro overcame European football powers such as PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona , who recorded 42, 39 and 37 victories, respectively, which further consolidates the numbers achieved since the coach began his work at Mengão.
In addition to the record, Flamengo also confirmed its place in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores . The team eliminated Internacional with two victories: 1-0 at Maracanã and 2-0 at Beira-Rio. In the next round, they will face Estudiantes (ARG).
