The journey towards the third continental championship started on the right foot for Flamengo. After beating Boca Juniors (ARG) on Sunday (15), the Pride of the Nation took no notice of Toros de Chiriquí, from Panama. Playing at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gym, Mengão scored 99 to 72 and finished the first window of the Basketball Champions League of the Americasin the lead.
Therefore, Flamengo starts at the top of Group B, with two victories. In second place comes Boca Juniors, who beat the Panamanians 92 to 71, also in Tijuca, on Monday (16). Toros, on the other hand, are at the bottom of the group and are in a delicate situation in the Champions League, thinking about qualifying for the next phase.
The match
Relying on Toros' lack of aim Chiriquí, Flamengo managed to open a ten-point lead in the first quarter, when they closed at 23 to 13. As the match was easy and the game did not require great concentration from the red and black, there was a natural relaxation in the following ten minutes, when the Rubro-Negro scored 18 to 17.
However, coach Gustavo de Conti woke up the team in the locker room and Flamengo came with another tune in the third period. With Gui Deodato and Shaquille Johnson inspired, Mengão scored an incredible 34 to 17. With a good margin, the coach started to rotate the squad, in the last quarter, the difference was just one for Mais Querido (24 to 23). p>
And now?
Now, Flamengo, Boca Juniors and Toros de Chiriquí face each other again, for the second window, in Panama. On January 12th, Mengão will face the home team. Later, on 01/13, Pride of the Nation catches the Argentines. Finally, the Buenos Aires club and the home team will play each other on 14/01.
The end of the first phase of Group B of the Champions League of the Americas takes place in the Buenos Aires window, also in 2025. Before the turn of the year, however, Flamengo has four commitments for Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB). On Friday (20), in Rio de Janeiro, Mengão will face Bauru. Still in 2024, there are commitments to Paulistano, São José and Mogi.
