Flamengo athlete Rebeca Andrade continues to accumulate historic achievements in artistic gymnastics. The Olympic medalist shone once again off the stage by winning the Laureus World Sports Award in the Comeback of the Year category, at an event held this Monday (21), in Madrid . The ceremony is considered one of the most important in global sport and brought together names such as Simone Biles, Carlos Alcaraz and Max Verstappen.

INTERNATIONAL AWARD RECOGNIZES OVERCOMING ACHIEVEMENT AND OLYMPIC PERFORMANCE

The awards, organized by the Laureus World Sports Academy, are made up of votes from around 1,300 journalists and sports media professionals from different countries. Rebeca was nominated for her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, when she overcame serious injuries to return to the elite of world gymnastics. Even after three knee surgeries, she won four medals: gold in Floor Exercise, silver in Vault and Individual All-Around, as well as bronze in the team event.

THE COMPETITION WAS FIERCE WITH OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL ATHLETES

In the category won by Rebeca, there were other top athletes who also returned to the top level after adversity. Among the nominees were swimmer Caleb Dressel, swimmer Ariarne Titmus, pilot Marc Márquez, skier Lara Gut Behrami and cricketer Rishabh Pant. Despite facing strong competition, the Brazilian gymnast came out on top and reinforced her position as a world reference.

Rebeca now joins a select group of Brazilian athletes recognized by Laureus. She is the first woman from the country to win the award, repeating a feat that had previously only been achieved by men such as Ronaldo Fenômeno, in 2002, and Daniel Dias, a multi-medal winner in Paralympic swimming, in three different editions. The impact of this achievement goes beyond the medals and shows the international recognition of her career.

Even before the official announcement of her victory, Rebeca was already showing her gratitude for being among the nominees. In an interview given during the event, she said she felt honored to participate in the ceremony. " Just being here makes me feel very happy. It is recognition for our effort and dedication. These are unique moments in our lives, like the Olympics. I am enjoying all of this and learning from the other athletes," said the gymnast.

Sesc Flamengo achieved an important victory over Tijuca Tênis Clube, this Tuesday (7), and sealed its place in the final of the Carioca Volleyball Championship. After the setback against Fluminense in the previous round, Bernardinho's team reacted with authority and won by 3 sets to 1, with partial scores of 25/21, 25/23 and 25/23.

Despite a brief stumble in the third set, when the opponent showed a strong reaction , Mais Querido maintained control of the match for most of the time and ensured its return to the state final.

CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE

The first two sets had a similar storyline: Sesc Flamengo dominated technically and tactically, but faced resistance from Tijuca Tênis Clube. In the first, the red-and-black team opened up a six-point lead, but saw their opponent close in late in the set, finishing 25-21.

The balance continued in the second set. The teams were tied at 20-20, until Mengão managed to open up a two-point lead and close it out at 25-23, extending their lead. In the third set, Tijuca fought back and took an 11-4 lead, exploiting Sesc Flamengo's defensive lapses. However, Bernardinho's team held their nerve, narrowed the gap, and regained control in the final stretch, turning the score around to 25-23.

FLUMINENSE WILL BE THE OPPONENT

With this result, Sesc Flamengo secured a spot in the final of the Rio de Janeiro Volleyball Championship, where they will once again face Fluminense—the team they defeated in the previous round. The final promises to be a tight contest, featuring two of the strongest squads in the state.

FLUMINENSE REACTS AND TURNS THE GAME AROUND
