The July transfer window has been marked by upheaval at Flamengo . This month alone, the club has already abandoned three deals that were practically closed : Mikey Johnston, Matheus Gonçalves, and Victor Hugo. So far, only Gerson's sale has followed the expected path—despite the turmoil.

These last-minute changes exposed the lack of alignment between different sectors of the club's management. Football director José Boto and club president Bap had to meet to contain a crisis that intensified after the Club World Cup . There was even restructuring in the youth teams, but the impasses continue to affect the market.

THE MIKEY JOHNSTON CASE

Negotiations with Mikey Johnston , who had even been issued a plane ticket to Rio de Janeiro, ended up stalling. The player had already been approved by Boto and the coaching staff, and the deal had the president's approval . However, internal political pressure and negative fan reaction led the board to veto the player. Bap publicly cited medical issues as the reason for his withdrawal.

MATHEUS GONÇALVES: DEAL UNDONE IN THE FINAL STRAIGHT

Matheus Gonçalves was also close to leaving the club. Flamengo had agreed with Cruzeiro to sell 50% of the young player's rights for €3.5 million (approximately R$22 million), with payment divided into three installments—the first upfront, the others in April and August 2026. Flamengo's president even gave the green light for the deal to be finalized.

However, hours later, Bap reversed his decision and informed Cruzeiro president Pedrinho that the sale was off. Without further explanation, the change in stance angered Belo Horizonte. Matheus, who was already preparing to leave, was taken by surprise .

VICTOR HUGO: RETREAT AFTER NEGATIVE REPERCUSSION

Victor Hugo, meanwhile, was on his way to Famalicão (Portugal) after his loan to Göztepe (Turkey) ended. Initially, Flamengo would not receive financial compensation but would retain 50% of the midfielder's economic rights . However, the negative repercussions of the transaction led the board to demand a higher price or that the agreement be restructured as a loan. The Portuguese club was angered by the change in terms and backed down. Now, Mengão is awaiting new proposals to loan the player.

MARKET: WHAT'S COMING NEXT

Despite the ups and downs, Flamengo remains active in the transfer market. Negotiations with Mikey Johnston were the most advanced, but they fell through. The club is still trying to release Jorge Carrascal and remains focused on bolstering the squad with a playmaker (number 10), a winger —preferably on the left—and is also monitoring options for the attacking command. Among the possible departures, Michael recently received an offer, and Pedro, who is experiencing instability, may seek new opportunities.

Flamengo and Mirassol face each other this Saturday (09), at 6:30 pm, at Maracanã, for the 19th round of the Brasileirão. Rubro-Negro arrives at the clash after being eliminated in the Copa do Brasil, with the mission of winning to maintain the leadership of the competition. On the other side, they will have an opponent motivated by a campaign above all expectations .

LEADER AGAINST SURPRISE

Flamengo has 37 points, the same number as Cruzeiro, but leads on goal difference (24 to 19) and still has a game in hand over the Minas Gerais team. A victory at Maracanã will guarantee the Rio de Janeiro club the top of the table at the end of the first round .

Mirassol, meanwhile, is the big revelation in this Série A. In its debut season, the São Paulo team sits fifth with 28 points— the result of seven wins, seven draws, and only two losses in 16 matches . Interestingly, it's the team with the fewest losses in the championship, along with Flamengo . With a victory, the newcomer could enter the top four of the competition.

MIRASSOL MOMENT

If Flamengo wins this Saturday, it will end Mirassol's three-month unbeaten streak. The São Paulo team's last loss was to Red Bull Bragantino on May 5th . Since then, Rafael Guanaes's team has won six and drawn three, with an impressive 77% success rate.

Initial projections pointed to a relegation battle, due to an experienced squad, an average age over 29, and several well-known names, such as midfielder Gabriel, formerly of Flamengo . However, the team's performance in the first round exceeded expectations: third-best attack (27 goals) and sixth-best defense (16 conceded), in addition to good results against more popular opponents.

KNOWN ROUTE

Despite this, the strategy against Flamengo should follow the usual visiting team strategy at Maracanã: a defensive posture, deep lines, and a reliance on counterattacks . Flamengo, in turn, should control possession and look for spaces to create the chances that will secure the victory.
