Gilberto was trained in Flamengo's youth teams and had a short spell at Rubro-Negro. With just two seasons between 1996 and 1998, the player played for other Brazilian clubs and made history in international football. In conversation with Zico in Resenha do Galinho, he recalled his times with Rubro-Negro.
Currently as coordinator of Flamengo's youth teams, the left-back was moved pointing out his moments as a Mais Querido player . And he explained details about his career.
The left-back was asked by Zico about his arrival at the Rio club. Gilberto recalled that he was part of América-MG's youth teams, but when he was about to turn professional, he received an invitation from Flamengo. At 18, he spent a period playing futsal in Spain, but he had no horizons for his future in the sport, being repatriated to Brazil to join Rubro-Negro.
Gilberto explained this period in detail: “I arrived at Flamengo in 1995, in November 1995 and in 1996 I was already doing the pre-season with the main team. It was already Joel Santana, I arrived there as the third substitute because there was Lira, left-back Alexandre Silva and I arrived as left-back”.
According to the former player, he worked hard behind the scenes to be recognized and, in 1996, he contributed to winning the Carioca Championship undefeated and explained: “For me, it was an important title because it was the first one that I was able to play alongside my brother (Nélio) and I always had that film in my head. . And I managed to be champion wearing the Flamengo shirt, because everyone wants to wear the Flamengo shirt.”
Finally, Gilberto, current coordinator of the Rubro-Negro youth categories, classified the small part of the his career at Flamengo as “special”. Currently, the former player works with athletes in training at the club that saw him become a professional and for which he has a special affection.
