After facing recent criticism for his underwhelming performance, Gerson stood out again with a solid performance in Flamengo's victory over LDU , this Thursday (15), at Maracanã. Even without scoring or directly participating in goals, the midfielder demonstrated great commitment and was one of the most praised names of the match by coach Filipe Luís.
In a press conference after the match, the red-black coach made a point of defending the player from recent criticism. Filipe Luís highlighted the athlete's physical effort and versatility on the field. “ First, Gerson sacrifices a lot for the team. Against the Ecuadorian team, Gerson recorded impressive numbers. The midfielder created three goal chances, had a 92% pass accuracy rate, made full use of his dribbles and won six direct challenges on the ground. In addition, he contributed with two defensive actions, showing balance between the sectors of the field . His performance was decisive in the team's collective functioning, despite the lack of direct participation in goals.
Despite his good performance, the athlete will be out of Flamengo 's next match . Gerson was sent off in the last round of the Brasileirão, against Bahia, and is serving an automatic suspension. With that, coach Filipe Luís will have to look for alternatives for the midfield sector in the classic against Botafogo, scheduled for this Sunday (18), at 6:30 pm, again at Maracanã.
