The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced the suspension of the Brazilian Championship for two rounds, in solidarity with the state of Rio Grande do Sul, affected by a serious environmental tragedy.

The decision affects the 7th and 8th rounds, which should take place over the next few weekends. The measure was supported by 15 of the 20 clubs in Series A, after an initial request made by the 11 clubs in the Liga Forte União, with subsequent adhesion from Atlético-MG, Bahia, Grêmio and Vitória.

The clubs that did not support the suspension were Bragantino, Corinthians, Flamengo, Palmeiras and São Paulo. The CBF reiterated the importance of the connection between sport and society, especially in times of crisis, and expressed its support for the victims of the catastrophe.

The list of clubs that requested a pause in the championship includes names such as Atlético Goianiense, Atlético Mineiro SAF, Club Athletico Paranaense, among others. The Gaucho Football Federation also supported the suspension, reinforcing the request to the CBF.

According to the CBF, the competition is scheduled to resume on June 1st with the 9th round, if no further changes to the calendar occur. Meanwhile, the games of clubs from Rio Grande do Sul were already suspended until May 27th due to the same tragedy.

The entity announced that the meeting of the Extraordinary Technical Council of Series A will be held on May 27th. At this meeting, technical aspects of competitions, athlete registrations and transfers, and legal issues related to access to international competitions will be discussed.
