The 2025 Club World Cup, which already has big clubs like Flamengo, Palmeiras and Fluminense guaranteed, has generated discussions on the world football scene. Recently, Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the tournament. According to Tebas, the competition, organized by FIFA, is "unnecessary" and faces difficulties in terms of sponsorship and broadcasting rights.
During an event in Brussels, Tebas appealed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, asking for the Club World Cup to be cancelled. "I want to make a request to Infantino and FIFA regarding the World Cup. You know that they did not sell the broadcasting rights for the budget they made for this Club World Cup.
FORMAT AND 2025 CLUB WORLD WORLD CALENDAR
The 2025 Club World Cup is scheduled to take place between June 15 and July 13, based in the United States. The new format of the competition will feature 32 teams, divided into eight groups of four teams. The top two in each group advance to the round of 16, and the tournament continues in a knockout format until the final.
GUARANTEED CLUBS AND REMAINING SPACES
Brazilian clubs like Flamengo, Palmeiras and Fluminense are already guaranteed in the competition. If Mengão wins the tournament, they will win their second world title, repeating the feat of 1981, when they defeated Liverpool 3-0. There are still two places to be filled: one destined for the 2024 Libertadores champion and the other for the representative of the United States. Unidos, which will host the competition.
FUTURE OF THE WORLD WORLD STILL UNCERTAIN
Javier Tebas' statements reinforce the tension surrounding the new format of the Club World Cup. In addition to criticism from directors, the competition still faces commercial challenges, with the sale of broadcasting rights and sponsorship agreements below what FIFA expected. Football's highest governing body has not yet officially commented on the LaLiga president's statements.
