Flamengo and Palmeiras are great rivals and compete for titles every season. This year has been no different and the duo has been measuring up in the Brazilian Championship since the beginning.

Tite's team was leader until the last round, but lost to Fortaleza and was overtaken by Palmeiras and also Botafogo. Now, the red-and-blacks will need to recover.

Flamengo fans were very unhappy with the team's performance, but they supported them at all times and hope that, with the return of the players who are in Copa América, the leadership will soon be regained.

At the press conference, Abel Ferreira, after the victory over Atlético-GO, once again mentioned Flamengo when talking about Mengão's investments in the last 4 to 5 years, implying that Palmeiras does not this type of hiring.

“If you add up how much Flamengo spent in the last four years, Botafogo, Atlético-MG, Internacional… do the math and see. Fortunately, we have a competent Academy, which produces fantastic players (…)”, said Abel, who continued:

“(…) A president of character, an Anderson Barros who also helps us a lot, strong leadership within the group and modesty aside, I don’t think we have a bad coach,” he added.

Some Boys from the Ninho stood out in Flamengo's defeat to Grêmio last Sunday (22), such as Matheus Gonçalves, Lorran and Felipe Teresa. However, some names left something to be desired and were the target of criticism from journalist Mauro Cezar Pereira. Matheus Cunha was one of his main players.

Mauro didn't like the way Matheus Cunha behaved on the field. For the journalist, the first two goals had a good contribution from the archer, who would have done badly in both shots. Mauro still calls the player a “naked goalkeeper”.

“The young people did well. But Matheus Cunha is not capable of being Flamengo's goalkeeper. He missed two goals, bizarre misses. The second, it seems, you know, naked goalkeeper? He goes to play ball with his friends, Aranha doesn't show up to score the goal. Then Maurício Barros appears. From your friends, who play ball with you. He doesn't know how to play in goal. Then he does what, he goes down, defends with his leg instead of defending with his hand, and takes the goal”, compares Mauro.

MAURO QUOTES JORGE SAMPAOLI WHEN TALKING ABOUT MATHEUS CUNHA< /b>

Soon afterwards, Mauro Cezar quotes Jorge Sampaoli to criticize Matheus Cunha. It's worth remembering that the archer was the Argentine coach's starter while commanding Mais Querido.

“It's a ridiculous thing, for a professional goalkeeper to defend like that. There is no condition. Sampaoli's legacy was convincing Matheus Cunha that he plays well with his feet and that he can be Flamengo's goalkeeper. He has no condition, he has to be loaned. He compromised a lot”, he analyzes.

FOCUS ON THE NEXT CONFRONTATION

After preserving Rossi, Tite will return to using the main team next Thursday (26) , when Mais Querido faces Peñarol, in the second leg of the Libertadores quarter-finals. The clash will be at 7pm, in Montevideo.

Loud music in the mixed zone, “title” celebration at the airport, posts on social media with Christ the Redeemer wearing the Peñarol (URU) shirt and the coach mocking Flamengo fans... The Uruguayan team's party after The 1-0 victory at Maracanã, in the first game of the Libertadores quarter-finals, caught the attention and angered the red and black players. The “exaggerated” celebration also had repercussions in Uruguay, generating an ironic comment from journalist Valentín Fletcher, who teased: “Were you champion?”.

“Congratulations to the Penãrol fans for winning a new championship. Peñarol has been playing at an international level for many years, which doesn't even fit in Uruguay. You won the Maracanã, right? Oh, it didn't come out. I saw a lot of people ecstatic and excited. But… My mistake for not being well informed” said Valentín Fletcher, appearing on the channel 'Las voces del fútbol', from Uruguay.

Criticisms of Arrascaeta and Varela

In addition to mocking the party of Peñarol fans, Fletcher criticized two Uruguayan players who defend Flamengo. “They are a disgrace, starting with the Uruguayans. They have to ask the public for forgiveness. Guille Varela played with the Peñarol shirt (underneath). From Arrascaeta, okay, he's a Peñarol fan, he wants to play for Peñarol. But you have to respect the Flamengo fans”, declared Fletcher.

The journalist recalled that Varela, trained in Peñarol's youth categories, always showed affection for the Montevideo club. Arrascaeta, on several occasions, expressed his desire to end his career with his childhood team, which will precisely be Flamengo's next opponent.

Peñarol's celebrations

The list of Peñarol celebrations at Maracanã was extensive. After the end of the game, the players played loud music, singing and dancing in front of Brazilian journalists. At the airport, the athletes celebrated with the fans, jumping and celebrating together.

In the changing rooms, goalkeeper Aguerre took a photo pointing to the patch with Peñarol's five Libertadores cups (although he had never seen the club to win the tournament, as it was born in 1993 and the last title was in 1987). Coach Diego Aguirre, in turn, celebrated the fact that he “silenced Maracanã”.

There's still a game

With the scenario still open , Peñarol and Flamengo meet again next Thursday (26), this time at the Campeón del Siglo Stadium, in Montevideo. After losing 1-0 in the first game, Flamengo needs to win by two goals to guarantee their place in the semi-finals. A 1-0 victory would take the decision to penalties. The match starts at 7pm (Brasília time).

After being eliminated from the Copa do Brasil, Palmeiras could still suffer another loss. This is because coach Abel Ferreira will be judged by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) and could face up to six months and suspension for making an obscene gesture towards the referee during the confrontation against Flamengo.

Abel Ferreira was denounced in the article 258 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice: "assuming any conduct contrary to sports discipline or ethics, such as disrespecting referee members". Thus, the penalty ranges from one to six games.

ABEL'S MANAGEMENT

Palmeiras needed a victory to be able to eliminate Flamengo from the Copa do Brasil. In the second game, at Allianz Parque, Abel Ferreira made the gesture after disagreeing with referee Anderson Daronco's call in the 38th minute of the second half.

After review by the VAR, the coach was sent off and left the team in the minutes end of the match. Even though the image was not clear, Abel Ferreira went so far as to argue that the movement did not target referees.

FLAMENGO IN THE BRAZILIAN CUP

After beating Palmeiras, Mais Querido faced Bahia, in the quarter-finals of the competition, also beating the team led by Rogério Ceni. Now, Rubro-Negro is preparing to face Corinthians, in the semi-finals of the matta-mata.
