When he played for Flamengo, João experienced his best phase at the hands of Dorival
|
In the debut of coach Dorival Júnior, former coach of Flamengo, the Brazilian team faces England this Saturday (23 ). The match is an international friendly scheduled to start at 4pm (Brasília time), at the legendary Wembley Stadium, in London (ING).
Brazil, fifth in the FIFA national team rankings, plays its first match in 2024 trying to recover from last year's poor performance. The five-time world champion team is coming off three consecutive defeats, to Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina.
England, third in the FIFA rankings, is undefeated since falling in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar to France. Since then, there have been ten games, with eight wins and two draws.
Recognized for his marking ability and intelligent occupation of spaces during his time at Flamengo, João had to undergo a remodeling process on the field. Looking at yourself and identifying your weaknesses was the first step towards becoming more complete and dynamic.
When he played for Flamengo, João experienced his best phase at the hands of Dorival, when he won the Copa do Brasil and Libertadores, being one of the main men in that team's midfield.
Dorival's call was not the first to defend Brazil. Also on the FIFA Data of March in 2023, the player recently sold to Wolves was on Ramon Menezes' list, but did not take the field in the defeat to Morocco. Experience that João Gomes sees as decisive in making him more comfortable:
— I already went once, so that broke the ice. Take away the anxiety of saying I'm in the national team, of seeing the players' reception. I think my first call-up was really good for breaking the ice of anxiety. Today I feel like I'm more mature, in a better moment. The time I was called up, I had just left Brazil.

The women's team returns to the field on Sunday, against Japan, in the second round
|
The Brazilian women's football team debuted with victory at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This Thursday, Brazil beat Nigeria 1-0, in Bordeaux, with a goal from Gabi Nunes, completing a good pass by Marta.
The goal scored by Gabi Nunes was the attacker's fifth for the Brazilian team. Shortly before the score was opened, Rainha Marta found the net, but the goal was canceled by the referee due to an offside. Overall, Arthur Elias' Brazil maintained an offensive posture and control of the game after taking the lead. Nigeria offered little danger to the goal defended by Lorena.
SummaryWhen the ball rolled, nervousness was the team's main factor in the first minutes. Using missed passes and intercepted direct calls, Brazil was initially unable to trouble the Nigerian team. Without control of the match, the Canarian team suffered from quick departures from their opponents. So, in the 15th minute, goalkeeper Lorena saved the team by defending a one-on-one shot with Chinwendu Ihezuo.
After the initial tension, it was Brazil's turn to take control of the game. At 35 minutes, Antonia found Marta, who converted, but saw her goal disallowed due to the assistant's offside. But soon after, it was the Queen's turn to find a perfect pass for Gabi Nunes, who finished strongly and filled the net to put the Brazilian team ahead.
What now?In the second stage, the team led by Arthur Elias kept the situation under control. Counting on Lorena's safe defenses, the team that won the silver medal in 2004 and 2008 confirmed its success.
With the triumph, Brazil takes second place in Group C, tied on points with Spain. In the next round, the team will face Japan, while Nigeria will face Spain.
