At the start of the 2024 season, technician Tite gave a clear sign of confidence to Gerson and placed the midfielder as captain of Flamengo. However, the athlete ended up sidelined due to a kidney infection. During this period, Uruguayan De La Cruz took over the position, and Fla grew in performance. Now, with Coringa preparing for his return, the scenario for position disputes could be different.

Treated by Tite as a versatile athlete, Gerson has already played in three positions since the coach's arrival: second midfielder , central attacking midfielder and right midfielder. It is precisely in this last option, more prone to the side, that Gerson should intensify the dispute.

Currently, the right midfielder most used by Tite is Luiz Araújo. Despite the number 7's good performance, the coaching staff never hid their desire to sign another player for the position. Therefore, when Gerson is 100% recovered and capable of playing, the tendency is for him to be tested in the position, according to the plans of Tite and his assistants.

De La Cruz and Arrascaeta are 'untouchable'< /b>

Currently, in midfield, De La Cruz and Arrascaeta are highlights of the team. In addition to the chemistry already achieved in the Uruguayan National Team, the athletes managed to deliver dynamism and speed to the sector. As a result, the roles of central attacking midfielder and second midfielder are already well defined in Tite's team, with little room for competition for position.

Gerson is still not fit to play< /p>

Despite having returned to work at Ninho do Urubu last Wednesday (13), Gerson still cannot go to the field. The player is undergoing a gradual recovery after undergoing hydronephrosis surgery. As a result, the new number 8 should only return to play in May.

Gabigol is now out of the relationship due to fibrosis in the posterior muscle of his right thigh. Flamengo, in a statement, reported that the athlete did not suffer any injury in the region. Check it out:

"The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that the athlete Gabriel Barbosa underwent tests that did not diagnose an injury to the posterior muscle of his right thigh. However, the Technical Committee opted for precaution and did not list him for the duel against Peñarol due to fibrosis in the region. A fundamental piece in coach Tite's scheme at Flamengo, Gerson faced a difficult time this year, when he had to step away to treat hydronephrosis, which required surgical intervention. However, as the saying goes "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger", the 'Joker' came back even stronger. Since the surgery, the midfielder has participated in all available games, whether for Rubro-Negro or the Brazilian team.

Impressively, Gerson was on the field for 83% of the possible minutes between Flamengo and Selection. This means that he played 38 consecutive matches — 36 for Flamengo and 2 for Brazil —, totaling 3,420 minutes, of which he played 2,835.

At a time when Flamengo faces physical exhaustion and several injuries, Gerson seems immune to these problems, remaining in excellent physical shape and with an extraordinary performance, which justified his call-up to the Brazilian team.

Gerson's numbers in the impressive sequence of minutes on the field

Despite having undergone surgery, Gerson did not lose his consistency. Even with the marathon of games, the number 8's level of performance remained high. During this run of 38 consecutive matches, he scored 2 goals and provided 5 assists.

In addition to his offensive contribution, Gerson also stands out defensively, even playing in a more advanced position under Tite's command. He has an average of 86% success rate on passes per game, many of them in the final third of the field, 52% success rate on long balls, almost two tackles and four ball recoveries per game.

This regularity , combined with his numbers and the physical effort required to participate in so many consecutive games, make Gerson one of the most underrated players in the country today, despite all of his quality not always being highlighted in comparison to other names in Brazilian football this season.< /p>
