The draw for the round of 16 of the Libertadores Cup has defined a traditional and balanced duel in Brazilian football: Flamengo and Internacional will face each other in August , reliving notable clashes throughout history. The first match will be hosted by Mengão at Maracanã and the second leg will be at Beira Rio.
This will be the third time that the clubs have faced each other in a knockout stage of the Libertadores . The most recent memory is from 2019, when Jorge Jesus' team beat Colorado in the quarterfinals and began the victorious campaign that would culminate in the continental championship for the second time.
In 95 official matches between the teams, the record shows balance: 36 wins for Internacional, 30 for Flamengo and 29 draws . The Gauchos also have the advantage in the number of goals: 129 against 108. However, when the duel is for direct classification, Rubro-Negro usually does better. In six knockout matches, Mengão advanced in four – including the 1987 Copa União final.
Colorado won two of them : in the 1999 Libertadores Cup and in the 2009 Copa do Brasil. In the 12 games that made up these knockouts (home and away), Flamengo won four, Inter won three and five ended in a draw. Fla scored 14 goals against 11 for the Gaúchos.
Now, the two giants will face each other again in a promising scenario . Flamengo is considered one of the favorites for the title and is enjoying a good moment under the command of Filipe Luís. Inter, on the other hand, is counting on a team adjusted by Roger Machado and will have time to prepare, since Fla will be involved in the Club World Cup during the break.
Former midfielder and commentator claims that the winner of the clash between the red-blacks and colorados could reach the final, also citing Botafogo and Palmeiras

Former player Felipe Melo, currently a commentator for Grupo Globo , predicted the outcome of the Copa Libertadores da América and pointed out that the champion of the edition could come from the clash between Flamengo and Internacional. During his participation in the program Fechamento, on SporTV, last Sunday (10), the former midfielder also highlighted Botafogo and Palmeiras as strong contenders for the continental title.
"Saying who will beat the champion is very complicated. Who has the best chance? For me, Flamengo, Botafogo, and Palmeiras. Botafogo is growing, and they've got players coming in who are already making a difference. And Palmeiras always comes through. I think we'll indeed have another Brazilian final," he declared.
Felipe Melo emphasized that, given the crossover of the knockout stages, the team that qualifies from the duel between Flamengo and Colorado will have a good chance of reaching the final: "I think whoever gets past Flamengo and Inter will go on to win the final. Based on what's happening, I'd put those three— Palmeiras, Flamengo, and Botafogo—as the ones with the best chances ," he stated.
On the same side of the bracket, in addition to the two Brazilian teams, are Cerro Porteño-PAR, Estudiantes-ARG, Fortaleza, Racing-ARG, Peñarol-URU, and Vélez Sarsfield-ARG. For the commentator, this scenario increases the prospects of a Brazilian team advancing to the final.
The first game of the round of 16 between Flamengo and Internacional takes place this Wednesday (13), at 9:30 pm , at Maracanã. The return match will be played on the 20th, at Beira-Rio.
Former coach points out that coaches insist on a single game model and warns of defensive risks caused by excessive possession when releasing the ball.

Former coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo assessed Filipe Luís's early tenure at Flamengo and compared his game plan to that of Fernando Diniz, currently at Vasco. He believes both teams are flawed by insisting on a single tactical scheme without creating alternatives, which exposes defenses to danger in decisive moments.
"Within this change, Fernando Diniz , who was my player, created a style of play and believes it's the right one. How many decisive games has he lost? He could have had a much better career. Flamengo set an example of this. They lost because they wanted to leave at a time when they couldn't leave the field. The long ball is also a tactic," Luxemburgo declared on the podcast "De Jogador pra Jogador," hosted by Muller.
Luxemburgo recalled the elimination to Bayern Munich in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup , when Mengão was defeated 4-2. According to him, the insistence on playing from the defense made the opponent's job easier.
"Flamengo lost their World Cup qualification because Filipe Luís wanted to play all the time. Bayern pushed up and applied pressure. They defended well. They missed key plays and conceded goals. They were eliminated from the competition. What do you do? Pick the player with the best header, get everyone close, take the shot, and then compete for the second ball to escape the pressure. But people think it doesn't have to be that way," he explained.
When asked by Muller which team he currently likes in Brazilian football, Luxemburgo stated that he can't think of a team that excites him. Still, he highlighted the individual talent of the red-and-black players and the potential of the current manager.
"Flamengo has talented players. Filipe Luís is very young and has everything it takes to become a great coach . He's not a bad coach; he's young. So much so that, in my opinion, he made a mistake at the World Cup when he couldn't identify Bayern's team. But he's very good. It's like Fernando Diniz. There's no set tactical scheme, there are tactical schemes that you use depending on what's presented in the game . Flamengo has talented players, but I don't see a great team that excites me," he concluded.
Uruguayan participates in activity with the squad at Ninho do Urubu and could be included in the first leg of the round of 16 at Maracanã

Flamengo could have an important reinforcement in the duel against Internacional, this Wednesday (13), for the first leg of the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores. Nicolás De La Cruz, out since July 16, trained with the squad this Monday (11) on the Ninho do Urubu pitch and is close to returning to action under the command of Filipe Luís.
Confirmation of his presence will be defined after the activity on Tuesday (12), one day before the clash at Maracanã. The midfielder had been following a specific plan from the medical department, similar to that adopted in the first half of 2025, with the aim of recovering the performance shown at the beginning of the season.
The number 18 suffered a left knee sprain on May 18th. After returning from the Club World Cup , he felt pain in the area again and needed treatment to reduce inflammation. The schedule was designed to ensure he was available for the Copa Libertadores Round of 16.
With De La Cruz back in action, the club's medical staff is virtually unavailable. Danilo is in the final stages of recovering from a muscle injury, while Erick Pulgar continues treatment after surgery on his right foot on July 3rd.
