In the scoreless draw between Flamengo and Botafogo, in the 17th round of the Brazilian Championship, an illustrious fan stole the show off the field. Japanese Rui Hachimura, a Los Angeles Lakers player, appeared in the stands of Maracanã and enjoyed the atmosphere of the Rio derby. The presence of the NBA athlete surprised the fans and became a highlight on the club's social networks. Hachimura is on vacation in Brazil and took advantage of Sunday to watch the game at the stadium. On the networks, Flamengo joked about the visit and celebrated the meeting.
Hachimura , 26, is one of the standout players on the Los Angeles Lakers roster and a well-established name in the world's most prestigious basketball league. Born in Japan, he is one of the few representatives from the Asian country to achieve prominence in the NBA, and has been a role model for young athletes from his country.
At Maracanã, the Lakers ' number 28 watched a tight match without much offensive excitement. Flamengo and Botafogo drew 0-0, a result that kept both teams in the G4, but with a bitter taste for Filipe's team, which was trying to recover from the defeat to Fortaleza in the previous round.
The red-and-black coach chose to rest three starters — Pedro, Pulgar and Bruno Henrique — due to physical fatigue. In addition, Gerson was substituted at half-time due to signs of fatigue, a situation that also weighed on the team's performance during the derby. Although the football team was lacking, the red-and-black basketball team responded with a solid performance and an important result away from home.
On the same Sunday, Flamengo beat Corinthians in São Paulo and closed the NBB quarterfinal series 3-1. Now, the team led by Gustavo de Conti awaits the winner between Pinheiros and Franca to find out who their opponent will be in the semifinals. The jersey worn by Hachimura is exactly the same model used by the basketball team, and the gift to the player reinforces the good moment the sport is currently undergoing at the club. The expectation is that the visibility generated by the visit will help to strengthen Flamengo's image outside of football as well.
