"The name was a mistake, but it was the best we had at the time. It was another ride", explained Bruno. Sérgio added: "I didn't have a name or a place to play. That was it. It was just the will."
Before deciding on the name that would become iconic, other unusual options were considered by the group. "Sal Grosso" and "Cara de Gato" were some of the suggestions, but ended up being discarded. "That's when the cool ideas started. As we had a lot of barbecues, they said 'I think Sal Grosso is a cool name [...] Cat barbecue, cat face. The time has come and it's less worse than 'Sal Grosso' and 'Cara de Gato' was 'Sorriso Maroto'. We've been trying to find another one for 26 years", joked Sérgio.
Despite the unpretentious beginning and the improvised choice of name, Sorriso Maroto established itself as one of the biggest pagode groups in Brazil. His songs have become soundtracks for countless stories and continue to win fans across the country.
