The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), André Mendonça, ordered this Thursday the suspension of the licensing of sports betting houses that operated in national scope based on the regulations of the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj). The measure directly impacts companies such as Esportes da Sorte, sponsor of clubs such as Corinthians, Bahia and Grêmio, and PixBet, supporter of Flamengo.
As determined, Loterjand the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro have five days to apply the decision. The measure is based on the updated list of companies authorized to operate in Brazil, released by the Ministry of Finance on December 31st.
DEADLINE TO COMPLY WITH THE DECISION
According to national regulations, 14 companies obtained a definitive license to operate, paying a fee of R$30 million each. These licenses are valid for five years and include around 30 platforms. Another 52 companies received temporary permissions and have a period of 60 days to resolve issues related to the online betting system.
IMPACT ON BETTING HOUSES AND CLUBS INVOLVED
Both Esportes da Sorte and PixBet were not on the list of operators authorized by the Ministry of Finance. However, both continued their activities supported by Loterj regulations, an argument that was invalidated by the injunction.
The suspension raises doubts about the impact on sponsorship of big clubs like Corinthians and Mengão, which have the support of these platforms. The report sought contact with representatives from Esportes da Sorte and Corinthians, but has not yet received responses.
