Five fans were convicted last Monday (20) by the Spanish courts for making racist insults against Brazilian striker Vinícius Jr. during a match between Real Valladolid and Real Madrid, held on December 30, 2022, at the José Zorrilla stadium.
The Second Section of the Valladolid Provincial Court found the defendants guilty of five hate crimes . Each was sentenced to one year in prison, in addition to the suspension of the right to vote and work in areas related to education, sports or leisure for a period of four years. They were also fined between 1,080 and 1,620 euros.
The prison sentences were suspended, however, on the condition that the defendants do not attend football stadiums where official competitions are taking place for the next three years . The fans presented a letter of apology to Vinícius Jr. and expressed regret during the trial.
" Real Madrid CF informs that the Second Section of the Provincial Court of Valladolid has today handed down a conviction, with an agreement between the parties, against five people who, from their seats in the stands of the José Zorrilla stadium, made racist insults against our player Vinicius Jr. during the match between Real Valladolid CF and Real Madrid CF, held on December 30, 2022.
The defendants were found guilty of committing five hate crimes.
The court sentenced each of the convicted individuals to one year in prison. It also ordered the suspension of the right to vote for the same period , a ban on exercising functions in educational, sporting or leisure activities for four years, in addition to the payment of fines ranging from 1,080 to 1,620 euros.
The suspension of the prison sentences is conditional on compliance with the measure that prohibits the defendants from attending football stadiums where official sports competitions are held for the next three years. The defendants presented a formal apology and expressed regret through a letter sent to Vinicius Jr.
This criminal conviction follows other sentences handed down in recent months in cases of racist insults directed at Real Madrid CF players at the Mestalla (Valencia), Son Moix (Palma de Mallorca) and Vallecas (Madrid) stadiums. Criminal convictions were also issued for racist insults posted against Vinicius Jr. and other athletes on online forums. The convictions for hate crimes on this occasion represent an explicit recognition of the seriousness and offensiveness of such conduct.
Real Madrid, which has acted alongside its player as a private prosecutor in this case — and in many others still underway for similar reasons — will continue to work to protect the values of our club and eradicate any racist behavior in football and sport."
