Flamengo has officially signed midfielder Jorginho, 33, who joins the club after his contract with Arsenal in England ended. The player signed a three-year contract with the Rubro-Negro, valid until June 2028, according to information from journalist Fabrizio Romano, and will be registered to play in the FIFA Club World Cup, which will take place in June this year.
Born in Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Jorginho returns to Brazil after 18 years playing in European football. Having played for Hellas Verona, Napoli, Chelsea and Arsenal, the midfielder has won important titles, such as the UEFA Champions League (2021) and the European Championship (2020) with the Italian national team and arrives at Mais Querido after leaving the English club.
Negotiations between Flamengo and Jorginho have been dragging on since the beginning of the year. The Rio de Janeiro club sought the early release of the player, whose contract with Arsenal was due to end on June 30. However, the English club opted to keep the player until the end of the European season, preventing his immediate arrival in Rio de Janeiro.
Despite this, the parties reached an agreement for Jorginho to join the red-black squad in time for the Club World Cup . The competition is scheduled to start on June 14, and Flamengo will debut two days later, against Espérance de Tunis. If they win, the team will face Chelsea, Jorginho's former club, on June 20, in Philadelphia.
The signed contract provides for an annual salary of approximately R$27.8 million, totaling R$83.4 million over the three years of the contract. With this, Jorginho becomes one of the highest-paid players in Brazilian football. Jorginho's arrival is seen as strategic by Flamengo's board. Coach Filipe Luís, who took over the team in September 2024, considers the defensive midfielder a key player in providing balance to the midfield and leading the team in international competitions.

Bahia will have great difficulties when facing Flamengo this Sunday (5), in the 27th round of the Brazilian Championship. The team led by Rogério Ceni has 13 absences, a record number of the season , for the clash at Arena Fonte Nova, in Salvador, at 6:30 pm (Brasília time).
The Tricolor de Aço will have absences across all positions: goalkeeper, defense, full-backs, midfield, and attack. Nine players are injured and four are suspended, forcing the coach to resort to an alternative formation to face the league leaders.
Among the players missing are Luciano Juba, Rodrigo Nestor, Santiago Arias, and Sanabria , as well as players recovering from injuries like Kanu and Erick. The situation forces Ceni to assemble a new defense and even consider potential debutants.
