Luiz Eduardo Baptista (Bap) will take office as president of Flamengo Next Wednesday (18). Even before officially taking over, the new president's team is already working on the first steps to reorganize the club, with priority given to the Finance Department.
Financial challenges in early 2025
Flamengo will close 2024, the last year of Rodolfo Landim's management, with just R$ 3 million in cash. This scenario worries the new management, which assesses the need to take measures to balance finances in the short term. Among the alternatives considered are the sale of players and the possibility of new loans, although this could impact the club's debt.
The delicate financial situation is partly due to two large recent investments:
Purchase of the Gasologista land: R$ 170 million invested in the future construction of its own stadium.
Football signings: R$ 185 million in glove costs and economic rights to acquire players like Carlos Alcaraz, Gonzalo Plata, Alex Sandro and Michael.
Details of hiring in the second half of 2024:
Carlos Alcaraz: R$ 125.4 million (plus R$ 13.1 million in intermediation).
Gonzalo Plata: R$ 30 million (plus R$ 6.2 million in intermediation).
Michael: R$0 in purchase, but R$7.6 million in intermediation.
Alex Sandro: R$ 0 purchase, but R$ 3.2 millions in intermediation .
“Restructuring” as the main goal
In the first official note after winning the elections, Bap expressed concern about contracts signed by the previous administration. He recommended that suppliers wait until 2025 to formalize new agreements and announced that he intends to review or even cancel contracts that he considers harmful to the Flamengo.
Recognized behind the scenes as a skilled negotiator, Bap has a track record of success in financial reorganization. In 2012, he was a key player in renegotiating the contract with Adidas, which helped restructure the club's finances. Now, with a focus on restructuring, it seeks to implement solutions that guarantee Flamengo's economic sustainability.

On Wednesday night (06), Flamengo beat Atlético-MG 1-0 at Arena MRV , in Belo Horizonte, in the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil. With the same score as the first leg, but in favor of Rubro-Negro, the decision of the spot was left to the penalty shootout . In the penalties, the Minas Gerais team was more efficient and advanced to the semifinals.
Despite a strong performance over the 90 minutes, the result wasn't enough. In the penalty shootout, Atlético-MG converted four of their five attempts, while Mengão missed a penalty each from Wallace Yan and Samuel Lino.
After the end of the match, Filipe Luís, who led the team in the coach's absence , commented on the starting lineup and explained that the decisions were made based on the physical conditions of the available athletes.
"The decision on the starting lineup first involved some who didn't travel, Bruno Henrique and Luiz Araújo, who weren't fit to play , were barred. Some couldn't start because they were on vacation, like Lino, Royal, and Saúl," said Filipe Luís .
"Arrascaeta felt discomfort in the last game. And I put together a team with the players I have, just like in the first game , enough to win and play a great game. That's how they did it," said the coach.
Now out of the Copa do Brasil competition, the Rio team's focus is now fully on the Brazilian Championship . Next Saturday (09), Mengão hosts Mirassol at Maracanã, at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), for the 18th round of the competition.
