Flamengo's 1-0 victory over Atlético-MG this Sunday (27) had as its highlight a header from Léo Ortiz on a free kick. The move, which came in the middle of a tight game at Mineirão , once again highlighted the strength of the Rio de Janeiro club in the offensive set piece, a fundamental aspect that has gained new prominence since the arrival of Rodrigo Caio to the professional team's coaching staff.
After the match, coach Filipe Luís praised the role of set pieces as one of the tools for overcoming closed defensive systems. He also credited part of the improvement in this area to the recent addition of Rodrigo Caio to the coaching staff.
"Set pieces are one of the phases of the game, and we give them the importance they deserve because deadlocked games are often unlocked by set pieces. And we believe that the arrival of Rodrigo Caio, along with the entire staff, has greatly influenced this power. And the players themselves believe in and are feeling powerful again at set pieces . It's important that they get a taste for it and see that it always decides games," the coach said in a press conference.
Rodrigo Caio took over as permanent assistant coach in May 2025 and has been a part of the first-team squad at Ninho do Urubu ever since. A former defender with a successful run at the club, he joins the permanent coaching staff to contribute to their game analysis, especially defensive positioning and strategies such as set pieces.
"It's a way of creating chances. If you have eight corners, you have eight dangerous crosses into the box with important players on set pieces. Of course, the last opponents, except for Santos and Bragantino, were opponents who tried to close down more. Today, the way Atlético played was difficult. The players know it's 90 minutes , we have to be patient and defend well," he said before concluding.
"The goal can come in many ways, but it did, and the important thing is the victory. We have a lot to improve, to improve our performance. But the set piece was very important. The team created a lot to generate all the corners," concluded Filipe Luís.
Flamengo has scored three goals from set pieces in the last four times they've scored. Therefore, the former Mengão defender has considerable merit in the club's set piece training. Rodrigo Caio, in fact, has established himself at the club for his excellent positioning in the air.
