This Saturday (23) the 2023 Carioca Women's Championship begins. The launch of the competition will already be big, with the four main clubs in the State - Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco and Botafogo - playing. The tournament has new regulations and an unprecedented prize pool. There are eight teams in search of the title and Mengão adapts with a new coach.

For the first time in its history, Cariocão had a preliminary phase. In this, six teams competed for places in a single round. The four best teams qualified for the Guanabara Cup, in which the four teams with the highest investment enter. Duque de Caxias, Pérolas Negras, Serra Macaense and Tigres qualified, eliminating Búzios and Rio de Janeiro.

The Guanabara Cup will be played in a single round, with seven rounds. The four best placed qualify for the semi-finals, with the Olympic crossing (1st x 4th and 2nd x 3rd). The winners will compete for the decision for Carioca in 2023, in a single game on November 18th. The finalist team with the best campaign will decide at home.

And the prize is impressive, having never been so large. The team that wins first place will receive 25 thousand reais, while the runner-up will receive 15 thousand reais. Both third and fourth place will win R$5,000 each. In addition, all teams that qualified in the preliminary phase will first receive a bonus of R$5,000.

Mengão debuts this Sunday (24th) at 10am (Brasília time) against Pérolas Negras, in Gávea. The big news on the field will be the new coach to guide the athletes. Maurício Salgado will be responsible for the search for victory, after finishing the 2022 season in second place, under the command of Luís Andrade. The coach had left the club after being eliminated in the quarter-finals of the last edition of the Brasileirão.

Overall, the team has almost the same appearance as last season. Defender Agustina, right-back Rayanne and attacking midfielder Leidiane are the only ones who left the team. No reinforcements have been announced by the team so far. For Carioca's dispute, the main absence will be striker Sole Jaimes. The number 99 is pregnant and will not compete in this edition of Carioca.

Several Uruguayan newspapers covered the tie between Flamengo and Vasco this Sunday (15). Among the main vehicles, “El País” and “Montevidéu Portal” highlighted that Luiz Araújo left the classic with a possible knee injury and could be absent for Rubro-Negro in the first game of the Libertadores quarter-finals against Peñarol, next Thursday (19).

Luiz Araújo played just 18 minutes in the classic. The attacker felt his knee after a challenge with a Vasco defender and even tried to continue on the field, but ended up being replaced by Arrascaeta. At half-time, Flamengo issued a statement informing that the player will be re-evaluated by the medical department at Ninho do Urubu. The squad will be presented again this Monday afternoon (16).

Uruguayan newspapers consider the possible absence of Luiz Araújo a big problem for Mengão. The athlete is a starter in Tite's team, with the most matches for Flamengo this season (50) and leader in assists (10).

The newspaper 'El País' classified the player as a key player for the team: “The injury to Luiz Araújo, one of the most important players in Mengão's squad, expands the list of injured players just a few days before the clash against Peñarol in the Copa Libertadores.”

The 'Montevideo Portal' followed the same line, highlighting the importance of the striker: “In addition to the result, another bad news for Peñarol's next rival in the Copa Libertadores it was the departure of Luiz Araújo. The fast right-winger, starter for Flamengo, felt pain in his right knee after a blow.”

Currently, Flamengo's medical department has five injured players: De La Cruz, Michael, Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro, with the trio formed by Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro only expected to return in 2025.

Expectations for De La Cruz in the game against Peñarol

While awaiting Luiz Araújo's diagnosis, coach Tite revealed, after the draw against Vasco, that he hopes to count on De La Cruz for the duel against Peñarol . According to the coach, the Uruguayan's presence could improve the effectiveness of the team, which has shown good performance in recent matches.

“In training, when he (De la Cruz) was leaving, I asked 'is there enough for 20? minutes?'. He smiled, because he couldn't. The physical department definitely said they were not in a position to do so. Not even him feeling well. Especially because you have to talk to the athlete, because then there is the charge. Hopefully, and I hope that he can be there on Thursday to reproduce today's performance, with greater effectiveness”, said Tite in the post-game press conference between Flamengo x Vasco.

After being eliminated in the first phase of the Brazilian Championship, Flamengo will bet everything on the last competition of the season, which will be the Championship Carioca Feminino, where the club already knows its group and its first opponent in the tournament. Maurício Salgado's team tries to erase its poor performance this season.

The 2024 Carioca Championship will start on October 5th and Flamengo will make its debut against Araruama, at 3pm. In this edition, 11 teams will be competing in the tournament, in addition to Flamengo; Fluminense, Botafogo, Vasco, Araruama, Duque de Caxias, Serra Macaense, Olaria, Pérolas Negras, Boavista and EC Resende will be the other participants.

Group A: Flamengo, Botafogo, Olaria, Pérolas Negras, Boavista and EC Resende.
Group B: Fluminense, Vasco, Araruama, Duque de Caxias and Serra Macaense.

The competition begins on October 5th and has 11 teams divided into two groups: one with six teams and the other with five. Teams face clubs from the opposite group, accumulating points only within their own group. Thus, the teams in Group A will play 5 matches against the teams in Group B, while those in Group B will play 6 matches against those in Group A.

After the end of the group stage, the two best teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. In the semifinal stage, the 1st placed team in each group will face the 2nd placed team in the same group in round-trip games. The two best teams in the semi-finals will have the advantage of playing the second match at home and will be able to qualify with an aggregate draw.

The winners of the semi-finals will face each other in the final, scheduled to take place on the 23rd of November, also in round-trip departures. In the final, the field hosts drawn by FERJ. If the aggregate score is tied after both games, the decision will be made on penalties.
