On Tuesday (20), Flamengo 's Deliberative Council approved the creation of a club company in the United States during the Club World Cup . With 177 votes in favor, the councilors formalized the club's financial plan to reduce taxes on the prize money from the FIFA tournament.
In total, 206 members of the board participated in the vote. There were 177 votes in favor, 17 against the approval of the accounts and 12 abstentions. The matter was presented to the board members last Wednesday (14), and the vote took place urgently due to the short time until the start of the competition. The World Cup will take place between June 14 and July 13.
The club's goal is to reduce tariffs that can vary from 30% to 46% depending on the city where the club plays. This amount is charged on the profits of foreign companies in the United States, as part of President Donald Trump's new tax policy.
The creation of a temporary company to register athletes exclusively during the tournament reduces this rate to around 21% , the rate for US companies. This strategy was devised after consulting with a US lawyer. The strategy was recommended by two specialist companies that provide consultancy services to the club: Sands Anderson PC and Ernst & Young (tax consultancy division).
FIFA's first payment will be on May 29, in the amount of $11.7 million (R$66 million) . The board stressed that if the company were not formed, the tax impact would be "full and onerous".
Flamengo will receive US$15.21 million (around R$86 million) just for participating in the Club World Cup. This amount is divided into US$7.8 billion targeted by taxes and another US$7.32 billion free of taxes in the US. And, without the company, the club is projected to lose almost more than 50%
The presentation to the Deliberative Council indicates that the club would be required to pay more than 6 million dollars (R$ 33.9 million) in taxes in the foreign country. Adding other discounts, the net profit for the participation would be 6.79 million dollars (R$ 38.3 million), which represents only 44% of the total.
Now, with the company in the US to register the players and greater freedom to manage the values, Rubro-Negro estimates that it can remain with 12.45 million dollars . An amount that represents 70.3 million reais at the current exchange rate.
Remembering that this amount is only for participation in the tournament. The prize increases as the club wins matches and achieves classifications in the tournament.
