Flamengo debuts in Libertadores 2024, this Tuesday (2), against Millonarios (COL). Despite the excitement for the good phase the team is going through and for the dream of the four, Rubro-Negro will have a weight loss. Gabigol, one of the greatest idols in the club's history and the team's main player in the competition, is out of the question for coach Tite.
Last Monday (25), the Court of Sports Justice Anti-doping suspended the attacker for two years for attempting to cheat an anti-doping test. The punishment came into effect on April 8, 2023, the date of the surprise exam that Gabi allegedly tried to cheat. The punishment, therefore, is valid until April 2025.
Gabigol's defense will try to have the sentence acquitted at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and will seek a suspensive effect. However, as Libertadores 2024 will start this Tuesday for Flamengo, there is no time to reverse the scenario and guarantee the idol's presence in the match.
Before Gabigol's arrival, Flamengo suffered in Liberators in the 21st century. Until then, Fla had managed, at most, to advance to the quarter-final stage. Furthermore, Rubro-Negro was coming off a recent negative streak in continental competitions.
In the 2017 Libertadores, Rubro-Negro lost to San Lorenzo 2-1 away from home with a goal in stoppage time of the second half. The match in question was valid for the last round of the group stage. With the result, Fla fell early in the competition, without even advancing to the round of 16. The following year, Flamengo played in the South American Championship. The team had a good campaign and reached the final, but ended up losing on aggregate against Independiente and finished second.
In 2019, the scenario changed. Rubro-Negro took the lead in that edition of the Libertadores and beat River Plate with two goals from Gabi in the final minutes of the match. There, the attacker entered Fla's history. Two years later, the team returned to the Libertadores final. Against Palmeiras, Gabi scored again, but did not avoid the 2-1 defeat. Thus, Flamengo finished second in that edition.
Despite this, the following year, Flamengo returned to the final and did not let the title slip away. Gabigol scored, Fla beat Athletico 1-0 and became three-time champions of the most important club competition on the continent. He is, therefore, the only athlete from this victorious generation to score for Flamengo in the Libertadores finals. Furthermore, he is the highest Brazilian goalscorer in the history of the competition (31).

Ticket sales for the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores quarter-finals, between Flamengo and opponent still to come to be defined, starts this Monday (9), at 10am. The game will be held on September 19th, at 7pm, at Maracanã. Nação fan members will have priority to purchase through the official website (flamengo.superingresso.com.br).
For the match, all fans who buy tickets online, in any sector of the stadium, will need to use registered facial biometrics to access Maracanã. No other means of access will be permitted for tickets purchased digitally. In addition, fans must have their original documents with photo upon entry.
Access to the stadium's security perimeter will be controlled by a dynamic QR code generated by the application Fla Tickets. Access to the interior of Maracanã will be done through facial biometrics.

Club seeks internal solutions for attack

After suffering a serious injury to his left knee, Flamengo striker Pedro is out of the 2024 season and only should return to the pitch in 2025. With the absence of number 9, Flamengo's board decided not to make major investments in the transfer market and opted to look for solutions within the squad itself. The main name chosen to replace Pedro is Gabigol, the club's idol, despite being in a less prestigious phase.
Even though he is experiencing a moment of lesser protagonism, Gabigol is seen as the main option to take the place of Pedro. Pedro. With decisive goals in the 2019, 2021 and 2022 Libertadores finals, Gabigol is still a reference for the red and black attack. The curious thing is that all the goals scored by Flamengo in the last three finals of the continental tournament went to number 99, consolidating his historical importance at the club.
Despite this, the striker lost space in the current season under coach Tite's command. So far, Gabigol has started just three matches, scoring four goals and one assist. However, he appeared in 21 games, which indicates his constant presence in the coach's options.
In addition to Gabigol, Flamengo has Bruno Henrique, who has already played as a center forward, and Carlinhos, a young promise from the base, as alternatives to make up for Pedro's absence. The club's bet is not to do "financial madness", focusing on making the most of the players who are already part of the squad.
Without Pedro, Flamengo returns to the field on September 12th to face Bahia, in a match valid for the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Cup. Rubro-Negro has the advantage of the first clash, having won 1-0 at Arena Fonte Nova. Now, the team only needs a draw at Maracanã to guarantee their place in the tournament's semi-finals.
