Flamengo debuts in Libertadores 2024, this Tuesday (2), against Millonarios (COL). Despite the excitement for the good phase the team is going through and for the dream of the four, Rubro-Negro will have a weight loss. Gabigol, one of the greatest idols in the club's history and the team's main player in the competition, is out of the question for coach Tite.
Last Monday (25), the Court of Sports Justice Anti-doping suspended the attacker for two years for attempting to cheat an anti-doping test. The punishment came into effect on April 8, 2023, the date of the surprise exam that Gabi allegedly tried to cheat. The punishment, therefore, is valid until April 2025.
Gabigol's defense will try to have the sentence acquitted at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and will seek a suspensive effect. However, as Libertadores 2024 will start this Tuesday for Flamengo, there is no time to reverse the scenario and guarantee the idol's presence in the match.
Before Gabigol's arrival, Flamengo suffered in Liberators in the 21st century. Until then, Fla had managed, at most, to advance to the quarter-final stage. Furthermore, Rubro-Negro was coming off a recent negative streak in continental competitions.
In the 2017 Libertadores, Rubro-Negro lost to San Lorenzo 2-1 away from home with a goal in stoppage time of the second half. The match in question was valid for the last round of the group stage. With the result, Fla fell early in the competition, without even advancing to the round of 16. The following year, Flamengo played in the South American Championship. The team had a good campaign and reached the final, but ended up losing on aggregate against Independiente and finished second.
In 2019, the scenario changed. Rubro-Negro took the lead in that edition of the Libertadores and beat River Plate with two goals from Gabi in the final minutes of the match. There, the attacker entered Fla's history. Two years later, the team returned to the Libertadores final. Against Palmeiras, Gabi scored again, but did not avoid the 2-1 defeat. Thus, Flamengo finished second in that edition.
Despite this, the following year, Flamengo returned to the final and did not let the title slip away. Gabigol scored, Fla beat Athletico 1-0 and became three-time champions of the most important club competition on the continent. He is, therefore, the only athlete from this victorious generation to score for Flamengo in the Libertadores finals. Furthermore, he is the highest Brazilian goalscorer in the history of the competition (31).

Flamengo was defeated 4-2 by Bayern Munich last Sunday (29), but the result on the field was in the background for TV Globo. The broadcaster reached a peak of 38 audience points during the broadcast, a number that highlights the strength of Rubro-Negro on open television.
The mark represents a new record for Globo in broadcasting the Club World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. For comparison purposes, the competition's average is around 22 points, meaning Flamengo surpassed this average by 16 points.
FLAMENGO HAS A METEORIC GAME AGAINST THE GERMANS
Despite the setback for the Germans, the audience did not feel the impact. The match was the most anticipated involving Brazilians in this edition of the Club World Cup, and the high interest was confirmed in expressive numbers. Even on a Sunday with other appealing games, such as PSG vs. Inter Miami, which featured Lionel Messi facing his former team, Flamengo stood out.
A HISTORIC HEARING
The match between the French and the Americans scored 18 points, exactly 20 less than the clash between Rubro-Negro and Bayern. The last time TV Globo had recorded such high audience ratings was in November 2023, during the Libertadores final between Fluminense and Boca Juniors. At the time, the number also reached 38 points. Flamengo , therefore, equaled this peak even in a match without a title at stake.
This data reinforces the club's national reach and the engagement of fans in any competitive scenario. The Club World Cup does not have the same emotional appeal as a continental final, but that did not stop Flamengo fans from watching, even if it was on their screens. Flamengo's performance throughout the tournament had a direct impact on Globo's audience ratings . With each match, the numbers increased. Against Los Angeles FC, for example, the game before the match against Bayern, Globo had already reached 33 points by then, the highest rating in the last 19 months on Tuesday nights.

Eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup semi-finals, Flamengo begins its transition back to the routine of Brazilian football this Monday (30) . The delegation leaves the United States at 10 pm (Brasília time) bound for Galeão Airport, on Governador Island, in Rio de Janeiro.
The return marks the end of the international stint, but also the beginning of a new plan. With the focus once again on national and continental competitions, Rubro-Negro is organizing the squad's return for next Saturday, July 5th, at 9:30 am, at Ninho do Urubu.
FLAMENGO RETURNS TO TRAINING AFTER THE WORLD CUP
The coaching staff decided to give the players a week off, as a way of recovering physically and mentally after the exhaustion of the competition. The break is strategic, as Flamengo has a marathon of games ahead in July, involving the Brazilian Championship, the Copa do Brasil and the Libertadores.
SERIES OF GAMES UNTIL THE END OF THE SEASON
The return will be marked by intense training at the training center, with a focus on regaining the lead in the Brasileirão and the decisive stages of the knockout tournaments. The tendency is for Mengão to use the period to adjust the team and recover players who returned from the World Cup with muscle fatigue.
Although Flamengo 's next match in the Brasileirão is theoretically scheduled against São Paulo, as the home team, confirmation of the date still depends on the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The game was scheduled to take place during the Club World Cup. With the early elimination, the club expected the match to be rescheduled.
