The 2026 World Cup qualifiers came to an end last Tuesday (09), and Flamengo striker Gonzalo Plata made his presence felt in the tournament with the Ecuadorian national team . Having qualified, the player highlighted that the objective now is to turn his attention to the club before thinking about the World Cup.
Flamengo's Gonzalo Plata after qualifying for the World Cup: "Focus on our clubs"
"Now all that's left is to make the most of the fact that we're going to the World Cup. Focus on our clubs before thinking about the World Cup and do things in the best way possible ," said Gonzalo Plata , after Ecuador's 1-0 victory over Argentina.
A regular in Ecuador's squad, Plata played in both matches on this FIFA World Cup . He came on in the second half of the 0-0 draw against Paraguay, playing 20 minutes. Against Argentina, he started and played until the 25th minute of the second half.
A key player in Filipe Luís's scheme, the striker has already played 32 games this season, with four goals and eight assists . Plata is competing for the starting left wing spot with Luiz Araújo, establishing himself as an attacking alternative for the red-and-black squad.
Having qualified with his national team and at the coach's disposal, Gonzalo Plata could return to the field for the Brasileirão this Sunday (14). Flamengo faces Juventude, at 4 pm (Brasília time), at Alfredo Jaconi, for the 23rd round. The Mais Querido leads the competition with 47 points, three more than Cruzeiro, who have played one more game.
Mengão has suspended the striker's punishment and wants to have him available for the match against Juventude.

Last Thursday (04), the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) punished Bruno Henrique with a 12-game suspension , in addition to a fine of R$60,000, placing the attacker under Article 243-A of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice.
Flamengo, however, has already filed a request for a stay of absence so that the number 27 remains available until the case is judged by the full court . Therefore, there is a possibility that he will play in the next Brasileirão match.
For now, Bruno Henrique is prevented from entering the field. If the suspension effect is not granted in time, the player will be out of the duel against Juventude , this Sunday (14). While awaiting the decision, the striker trains normally with the squad at Ninho do Urubu and participated in the activities both on Wednesday (10) and Thursday (11).
Without knowing whether or not they will have the number 27, Filipe Luís' team returns to the field on Sunday (14), at 4 pm (Brasília time), against Juventude , at Alfredo Jaconi Stadium, for the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship, seeking to remain at the top of the competition.
In the first round, the Red-Blacks thrashed their opponents 6-0, their biggest victory in the match. Even so, there's a taboo to be broken : Mengão hasn't won at Alfredo Jaconi since 1997, when they managed to leave with a 1-0 lead thanks to an own goal by Rodrigo Silva.

The "official announcement" made by Flamengo last Tuesday (09) generated great repercussion. While the red-black fans celebrated the campaign to transform the club into a "symbolic UN Nation" , critics reacted negatively. Among them, journalist Arnaldo Ribeiro, who classified the movement as an expression of "club arrogance" .
On Wednesday (10), the official page of the Nação Sócio-Torcedor program responded with irony on X (old Twitter) : “ Good afternoon, 'Soberbos Clubísticos'. Have you called everyone to sign the petition? Zico set a target of 500 thousand. Let's go?”
The post quickly went viral, with Flamengo fans amused by the provocation. In the comments, messages of support for the mocking tone multiplied: " I loved the mockery, keep it up, " wrote one. Another added: "In Arnaldo Ribeiro's face. The Bad Guy is on another level."
Arnaldo Ribeiro on Flamengo's UN campaign: "This drives people apart, not closer together"
During an appearance on the pay channel BandSports, Arnaldo stated that he disagreed with Flamengo's actions . He believes the campaign gives the impression of superiority and could alienate fans of other clubs:
"This idea of feeling bigger than others... Club arrogance. I don't think it's measured solely by the number of fans . I never understand when a popular club takes this initiative, when it intends to separate itself and become something unique, not admired by others. It drives people apart, it doesn't bring them together," said the journalist.
The Flamengo proposal seeks to transform the club into the world's first recognized "Symbolic-Cultural Nation." Although symbolic, the goal is to enhance the global reach of the club's fans and engage Flamengo fans around the identity of their "Most Beloved." The process is participatory: any fan can support the cause by signing the digital petition at peticao.flamengo.com.br .
The success was immediate. In less than seven hours, the campaign surpassed 100,000 signatures , a number initially predicted for the weekend. As of this article's publication, the movement has already garnered over 445,000 supporters from the Red and Black community.
