Lucas Paquetá's possible acquittal in the betting-fixing case could reignite speculation about the player's eventual return to Brazilian football . According to the British website Football Insider 247 , the midfielder is expected to be cleared of all charges he faced in England. This information was reinforced by journalist Keith Wyness, who claimed to have heard from sources close to the case that the athlete will not be punished.
The news stirred up the transfer market, especially at Flamengo , which was approached by the player's agents at the beginning of the season. At the time, their interest was hampered by the fact that the process was still ongoing , which dampened any possibility of progress in the negotiations.
If Paquetá is found innocent during the transfer window , Flamengo's move on him isn't ruled out. One thing is also certain: Flamengo won't invest €30 million (approximately R$180 million) . The former Flamengo player was formally charged by the English Football Association (FA) in May 2024 with four breaches of Rule E5.1, which prohibits any attempt to influence, for improper purposes, the result or progress of a match. The games under investigation were against Leicester (12/11/2022), Aston Villa (12/03/2023), Leeds United (21/05/2023) and Bournemouth (12/08/2023) , in which the athlete received a yellow card in all.
According to the FA, " it is alleged that he sought to directly influence the progress , conduct or any other aspect or occurrence of those matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market for one or more persons to profit from." In addition, the midfielder was also charged with breaching Rule F3 for alleged misconduct in answering questions and providing documents during the investigation.
From the beginning of the trial, Lucas Paquetá denied any involvement in match-fixing and said he was surprised by the accusations. "I am extremely surprised and upset that the FA decided to charge me. I cooperated with every stage of the investigation and provided all the information I could during these nine months. I deny the accusations in their entirety and will fight with all my might to clear my name. Due to the ongoing trial, I will not be providing any further comment," the athlete posted on social media.

During the post-match press conference, coach Filipe Luís commented on the decision to maintain the starting defensive formation against the Minas Gerais opponent. He said the decision was made considering the complexity of the match and the physical strain on the players.
"I think defense is a delicate area. I don't like to change the back line; I try to change it as little as possible. Considering the wear and tear you mentioned, there's also the opponent. They're a team that causes us a lot of problems in the back line," said the Flamengo coach.
