FIFA has released a special profile to present the clubs that will compete in this year's Club World Cup — and Flamengo has been highlighted. In the official guide to the tournament, the governing body of football praises the club's rich history , its most important titles and the idols that marked an era, such as Zico, Júnior and Zizinho.

FIFA on Flamengo in the Club World Cup guide: "With names like Zico, Júnior and Leandro, who have gained legendary status in Brazilian football"

“With names like Zico, Júnior and Leandro, who gained legendary status in Brazilian football, as well as the entire team, Rubro-Negro won the Brazilian Championship in 1980, 1982 and 1983, as well as the 1981 Copa Libertadores and the edition of the Intercontinental Cup ”, describes the guide.

In addition to the generation of the 1980s, FIFA also mentions other notable names from the red-black past and present. Zizinho, Gabigol, Filipe Luís and Diego Ribas are remembered for their recent achievements , the result of the financial restructuring that began in 2013, which is also highlighted in the text.

“A review carried out at the club paid off, ending with trophies, stars and better infrastructure. At the end of the last decade, Mengão returned to the top of Brazilian and South American football , with two national championships (2019 and 2020) and two Libertadores titles (2019 and 2022).”

FIFA HIGHLIGHTS RUBRO-NEGROS IDOLS

Zico, Júnior and Zizinho received exclusive texts in the guide . Each one had their trajectory detailed, with praise for the legacy they left for Flamengo and for world football. Galinho will be the ambassador of the Mais Querido in the World Cup and will travel with the delegation.

ZIZINHO

Pelé’s first hero, as the ‘King’ himself has stated on numerous occasions. Dubbed by many as the successor to Leônidas da Silva and the precursor to Pelé, Zizinho is a Flamengo legend for his talent, state titles and the revolutionary impact he had on football. He was voted the best player in the 1950 World Cup and his legacy transcends generations.”

ZICO

“Thanks to his genius on the field and his unconditional love for the club, Zico is undeniably an icon of Flamengo . 'The Little Rooster from Quintino' enchanted with his refined technique, vision of the game and ability to make decisions. More than just a goalscorer, he was the conductor of the great red-and-black orchestra, leading the team to national and international titles.”

JUNIOR

“Called 'Maestro' or 'Helmet', Júnior could easily have had ' Flamengo ' as his surname. Left-back and midfielder, he was the symbol of professionalism and leadership on the field . Libertadores champion in 1981, he returned to the club in 1989, at the age of 35, to continue writing his story alongside idols such as Leandro, Adílio and Zico himself.”

FLAMENGO IN THE CLUB WORLD CUP

Flamengo's debut in the World Cup is scheduled for June 16, against Espérance de Tunis, at 10 pm (Brasília time), at Lincoln Financial Field, in Philadelphia. Next, the Rubro-Negro will face Chelsea, in a decisive duel. Mengão ends its participation against LAFC, in Orlando.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti announced this Wednesday (1st) the call-up of the Brazilian National Team for the friendlies against South Korea and Japan, which will be played in October during the FIFA World Cup. Facing Flamengo away from home has been a tough challenge for Cruzeiro in the Brasileirão . The last time the Minas Gerais team beat Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro in the national competition was in November 2010, almost 15 years ago.

Since then, the teams have faced each other 11 times at Maracanã (or in matches hosted by Flamengo ) in the tournament, and the record is largely favorable to the Mais Querido: eight wins and three draws. During this period, historic defeats stand out, such as the 5-1 victory in 2011 , as well as important triumphs for the red-and-blacks' campaigns. The most recent was a 2-1 victory in June 2024.
