After the 1-0 victory over Bahia , last Saturday (10), at Maracanã , Flamengo coach Filipe Luís once again criticized the Brazilian football calendar. For the red-black commander, the short interval between games compromises the planning and physical performance of the athletes.

It's a very short time, there is no complete recovery...

“When there are games every three days, no player can fully recover. Against Bahia , we play at 9pm and the match ends at 11pm. The next game is at 9:30pm on Thursday, and then we play on Sunday at 4pm. Often, the interval is less than 72 hours . It is a very short time, there is no full recovery. But everyone is included in this schedule and goes through it. In terms of tactics, we are not able to go to the field with the players to do training sessions or long training sessions, as we do in busy weeks or when we have games every four or five days,” said Filipe Luís.

It’s a peculiarity of the South American calendar , especially in the Brazilian league. During this period, some players end up feeling it. There’s the strain on sleep, the sequence of games, the traveling — even the hormonal side is affected. Then, some athletes end up losing performance. But that’s why we have a qualified team : to overcome these complicated obstacles and work with the team to recover and be 100% for the games,” concluded the coach.

TIGHT SCHEDULE

Flamengo 's schedule has been intense. Before facing Bahia on Saturday, the team faced Central Córdoba , in Argentina, on Wednesday (7), for the Copa Libertadores . Between traveling, training and concentration, the squad barely had time to recover.

NEXT APPOINTMENT

Now, the team is preparing for the next challenge in the Libertadores . Flamengo hosts LDU (EQU) this Thursday (15), at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), again at Maracanã , for the fifth round of the group stage of the continental tournament.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti announced this Wednesday (1st) the call-up of the Brazilian National Team for the friendlies against South Korea and Japan, which will be played in October during the FIFA World Cup. The matches will take place in Seoul and Tokyo, beginning the team's preparation for the 2026 World Cup , scheduled for June next year.

Despite not including any current Flamengo players, the list of 26 names released by Ancelotti includes four athletes who have played for the Rio de Janeiro club: Vini Jr (Real Madrid), Wesley (Roma), Fabrício Bruno (Cruzeiro) and Hugo Souza (Corinthians) . All of them stand out in their teams and earned the opportunity to join the green and yellow group.

RETURNS OF RODRYGO AND VINICIUS JR

Among the main highlights of the list are the returns of Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr., both from Real Madrid, who are once again important players in the national team's attack. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, however, was sidelined due to an injury suffered in the English club's last game.

According to Ancelotti, the call-up prioritized players who play in European football , considering the logistics of traveling to Asia and the time difference. Still, two players who play in the Brazilian Championship were called up: Hugo Souza of Corinthians and Fabrício Bruno of Cruzeiro.

Facing Flamengo away from home has been a tough challenge for Cruzeiro in the Brasileirão . The last time the Minas Gerais team beat Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro in the national competition was in November 2010, almost 15 years ago.

Since then, the teams have faced each other 11 times at Maracanã (or in matches hosted by Flamengo ) in the tournament, and the record is largely favorable to the Mais Querido: eight wins and three draws. During this period, historic defeats stand out, such as the 5-1 victory in 2011 , as well as important triumphs for the red-and-blacks' campaigns. The most recent was a 2-1 victory in June 2024.
